A plain outfit won’t set the world on fire. It might look OK on a busy day when you barely have time to pull a brush through your hair, but if you want to make a lasting impression, you need to go the extra mile. It isn’t difficult to spice up a boring outfit. Accessories are great for adding interesting to plain clothes, and as long as you don’t go too mad, you will be able to transform a simple outfit into something amazing.

Jewellery is one of several fashion accessories that should be a wardrobe staple. A lot of people assume jewellery is expensive and therefore they don’t bother including it in their outfit planning. However, there is plenty of cheap fashion jewellery available in high street stores. As long as you select the right pieces, your outfit will soon have the ‘wow’ factor. And you won’t need to worry about a forthcoming bill from Tiffany’s to boot!

Pick a Statement Piece

Statement pieces are all the rage right now. Think big and bold and eye catching. The style you go for is entirely up to you – and there are loads to choose from. Ethnic jewellery is always a winner, especially if you are spicing up a festival outfit, but chunky or handmade can work really well with a simple outfit. For example, if you are wearing a simple monochrome column dress to a work event, give it a dose of personality with the addition of a funky ethnic necklace.

Focus on One Body Part

When it comes to jewellery, less is more. This is not to say you should only ever wear one piece of jewellery – although you can if you prefer – but be careful not to overdo it with multiple pieces of mix and match jewellery. For example, if you decide to go for an eye catching necklace, forget about earrings and bangles. Or, if you have a lovely bracelet, don’t wear a large statement necklace or it will be way too over the top.

Invest in an Expensive Piece of Jewellery

It is always a good policy to invest in one expensive piece of jewellery. A simple pair of diamond earrings or a diamond pendant will add a touch of class to any outfit, no matter what the occasion happens to be. And if you go for something timeless and classy such as diamond rings, you can easily team it with a couple of other modern pieces of jewellery.

Use Colour to Brighten Up a Plain Outfit

Plain outfits can be greatly enhanced with brightly coloured jewellery. For best results, choose colours that suit you or compliment your eye colour. When wearing neutral colours such as beige, grey, black or white, you can go for virtually any colour of jewellery. So experiment!

You can never have too much jewellery in your closet. Different pieces can be mixed and matched with dozens of different outfits, and if you are going away for a short break, a few pieces of funky jewellery can be used to great effect with a capsule wardrobe.
