How to Turn Your Love for Fashion into a Career

Don’t let people scoff at you when you tell them you see yourself prospering in the world of fashion. Though the industry may seem intimidating and exclusive, it doesn’t make it impossible to break into. You may not be a famous designer one day, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t capable of making a meaningful contribution to the fashion world while doing work that you love. All you need to do is formulate a plan and set off on your fashion adventure.

Start ablog

Starting a blog is inexpensive (or free) and easy enough to do from your home. Creating a blog will help you stay on top of trends in the fashion industry, while lending your expertise and opinions to people who also share a love for all things fashion. Regularly updated blogs rank high in Google, which means other people will be more likely to find you. This makes for excellent networking opportunities, while boosting your reputation as an authoritative figure on all things fashion.

Get educated

You can learn a lot from reading books and researching trends, but you can’t learn much about the inside of the industry this way. Consider taking some online fashion design courses to get a better look at things from the inside. You can find a whole range of fashion courses at CourseFinder. Having the right education can qualify you for better jobs within the industry, and will show potential employers that you take yourself and your career seriously.

Create a portfolio

Do you design or create clothing? If you do, leaving your sketches lying around your apartment isn’t going to help you make it in the fashion world. You’ll need to establish some kind of portfolio where people can view your ideas and creations. Starting a digital portfolio is a crucial step. There is no shortage of portfolio creation websites, and some people even use Instagram as a visual portfolio. Nobody will know what you can do unless you show them!

Find an entry-level job

Working at a clothing store is less than fashionable, but it’s a start. You’ll have to get your foot in the door somehow, and finding a career in fashion that provides opportunities for advancement is the best shot you have. If you have a degree, you may be able to start in management. This will reduce the time it will take for you to climb the ladder, helping you reach your end goal much sooner. You’ve got to pay the bills while you’re working toward your dream.

Search for internships

The industry is always looking for interns. Fashion magazines, fashion shows, and busy design offices always need someone who is willing to do the grunt work. While internships don’t generally pay, they count as valuable experience. If you have a workable portfolio and a ton of experience, the people you meet during your internship may be able to help you land your first job. Internships are one of the best ways to network, since you’re working directly with people who have established themselves doing the things you want to do.

The only thing standing in between you and your dreams is a little hard work and determination. If you want it badly enough and you’re willing to put forth the effort, you’ll get yourself to where you need to be. Just make sure you’re surrounding yourself with people who uplift you and nurture your fashion talents!
