Dressing appropriately for a professional environment does not mean that you leave your personal style at home. You can dress for the job that you want while at the same time feeling your best and showcasing your personality. The following are some tips to help you accomplish this.

Tailored Clothing Always Fits

Sophisticated work clothing is tailored to fit your body. When pants are properly fitted, they sit well and are free of visible panty lines. Skirts are loose enough to allow a person to sit and move around comfortably. A tailored jacket should be able to be buttoned comfortably. You don’t want to see gaps between the buttonholes of your shirt or your blouse. When your clothing fits right, you look great.

Spend Money on Shoes

Whether you are walking around in a three-piece suit or in men’s golf apparel, your shoes will say a lot about you. A shoe that has a simple design is timeless. You do not want the color of the shoe or the pattern of the sole to look gaudy or be fussy. A quirky pair of shoes might look good today, but in a few months they could start to look dated. A quality shoe is an investment that could last you for a decade or more. Brands like Ecco even come with a wear and tear warranty that will replace your shoes if you wear through them. Look for loafers, brogues, or a five-eyelet Derby. Stay away from shoes that have extreme points or square toes. These shoes are impractical and may distract from your professional appearance.

Understand the Role of Color

Color plays a major role in creating a professional image. Traditional colors in a professional environment include navy, gray, black, and red. Navy is associated with trustworthiness. Red is bold. Gray is a conservative color. Black is seen as being chic or serious.

When you understand this, you are able to play with these colors and even add a pop of color to your wardrobe. Look for mens golf apparel for work appropriate slacks with fun patterns and color. You can pair these with a solid polo or shirt. You may wear a pantsuit, skirt, blouse, or uniform that is all one color. But you can accent it with a complementary colored accessory, like a belt, shoes, earrings, necktie, or nail polish.

Know When to Throw out the Rules

There are a number of dressing taboos for the professional environment. Some of these rules are just tradition, and others are there because it’s what your employer expects. It is dangerous to get too hung up on traditional rules for dressing in the workplace. There are always occasions when bending or breaking them for the sake of fashion is a good idea. That’s how style advances. So enjoy the freedom that comes from pulling away from restrictive professional dressing standards.
