Military boots are a great addition to any fashion-lovers wardrobe. They bring to the wardrobe an element of edge – a little bit of rough that can send you into the heady heights of fashion…

…as long as you know how to wear them in a fashionable way. It’s very easy to get this style of boots wrong. To tip too far into the edgy look and instead create a “leave this person alone, they look a bit unhinged” look.

Clearly, most of you reading this blog will want to create the first look and not the second. Today, we are going to teach you how to make your outfit feminine so that the boots work as a focal piece to your outfit, rather than overly defining the look. It’s all about balance.

Balance Chunkiness with Well Fitting Clothes

The first thing you will need to do is to ensure that the boots are the only “chunky” item of your outfit. This means avoiding any heavy cable jumpers or puffer jackets. Instead, the rest of your outfit needs to fit well.

Here’s a good example of how to create this look:

• Bottoms: wear either a pair of skinny jeans or a pair of leggings.

• Top: wear a tight-fitted top, such as a basic tee from one of the big fashion retailers.

• Top 2: wear a cardigan in a thin material or else a jumper in a thin material.

• Coats: wear a well fitted coat that sits tight to the body and contours the feminine frame, e.g. it tucks in at the waste.

Balance Your Fabrics

Women’s military boots will be made of heavy leather, with thick stitching, and heavy-duty laces. To create balance from this perspective, you need to ensure that the fabrics of the rest of your outfit are gentle and soft.

Here are a few ideas:

• While it’s expensive, cashmere is a fantastic option for teaming against the heavier fabrics of the boots. It’s lightweight, but super soft and it has a naturally feminine feel to it.

• If not cashmere, then lamb’s wool is a great alternative. While it is a little rougher than cashmere, it is nonetheless soft and gentle. 

• Silk and chiffon are great choices for your top, or you can add a scarf to the outfit to really balance it out. This adds a super cute touch to the outfit and it helps to balance the masculinity of the boots.

Balance Colours

While masculinity is associated with neutral colours, femininity is associated with bright and fun colours. To balance your women’s military boots then, add some colour to the occasion. We’ve already touched on this above, but a great way to do this is to include a scarf.

They are both colourful, and you can find them in feminine patterns, such as flowers and butterflies. They will help to create a very cute look and buff away some of the harsher aspect of the edginess of the boots.

We would recommend that if you're going for a pretty pattern, that you downplay the colour, and vice versa.
