How to choose the right undershirt if you sweat a lot

Sweating is part of daily life, however, some people struggle with excessive sweating and hyperhidrosis.  This is a common condition for many men that makes them sweat more than others, ending up in sweat-soaked undershirts which are very uncomfortable as they try to conceal it, particularly when it comes to their outer clothes.

As you continue with your search for the ideal undershirt for sweat, you are bombarded with dozens of brands unloading thousands of undershirts leaving you even more confused. The purpose of this article is to help you find the perfect undershirt for your sweating problem.

What to Look For in an Undershirt?

  1. SWEAT-PROOF UNDERSHIRT

The sweat-proof undershirt is made with special technology that absorbs sweat, therefore, preventing it from penetrating to your outer clothing, keeping you cool and also protecting your clothes from sweat stains.

They target specific parts of your body, commonly the armpits, but you can also find others which are suitable for other body parts. The undershirt has 3 layers in the targeted spot, i.e the inner layer, middle and outer layer.  The inner and outer layers are made of standard materials, commonly cotton. The middle layer acts as the sweat barrier preventing seepage to outer layers and is commonly made of rayon.  The only downside with these is that the sweat-proof undershirts are typically pretty expensive to buy.

  1. TYPE OF MATERIAL

Next time you are at the store or shopping online for the right undershirt for you, here's what you should look for when it comes to material. There are two primary distinctions when it comes to material

  1. Synthetic fabric

These are materials that repel sweat, pushing it to the outer layer, enabling evaporation.  The market term for this is "wicking". These are commonly synthetic fabrics such as:

  1. Polyester; this is a durable fabric that is known for its water resistance. It repels moisture, so sweat remains on your skin making it not ideal for people who sweat a lot.
  2. Cotton/ Lycra Blend; cotton is an absorbent material. When combined with lycra, the result is a highly water resistant material which is therefore not suitable for heavy sweaters.

  1. Natural fabric

Natural fibers absorb moisture.  They are therefore the ideal undershirt for heavy sweaters.  Some examples of natural fabrics are:

  1. cotton; this is the best when it comes to absorbing moisture. Lightweight cotton is porous, letting your skin breath while absorbing sweat. Another variety of cotton is combed cotton, a very soft type of cotton that is comfortable on your skin and also a great moisture absorber, making it ideal for heavy sweaters.

  1. Rayon;Rayon is a high-quality natural fabric that comes from bamboo.  It is most preferred as it possesses the following qualities;

- Porous (for breathing), highly absorbent and also very soft

- It is hygienic and is also hypo-allergenic.  Therefore it is resistant to bacteria, mold, and odor even after washing it multiple times.

iii. Linen; This is a lightweight fabric that is breathable and does not cling to your skin thus cooling your body.

If you’re a heavy sweater, finding the right undershirt can be a difficult process.  However, if you take into consideration the points above, you’ll have a much better idea of what to look for when buying a shirt.  Now that you know which material to pick and which to avoid, it should be easier to decide on which undershirt to buy.
