How to buy bridal lingerie for your wedding trousseau

While shopping for your wedding trousseau, don’t forget to lay the solid foundation it needs to be built on: the lingerie. Buying your wedding lingerie is just as important and requires the same amount of thought as picking up an outfit. There’s nothing worse than finding that perfect looking lingerie set only to find yourself uncomfortable in it. Feeling sexy comes from confidence, and if you’re lacking conviction in what you wear, it’s hard to pull it off.

“Lingerie has to be beautiful, comfortable and usable. I hate the idea that people have to suffer for beauty. It’s 2017, we shouldn’t have to do that,” Julia Haart, creative director, La Perla tells us. From buying lingerie that suits another person’s taste to not checking the texture of fabric, Vogue spoke to Haart about the dos and don’ts of lingerie shopping for your wedding.

How does one go about buying lingerie for their trousseau?

You have to know what you like. Everyone’s trousseau is different depending on their taste. Obviously for your wedding night you want something white, bridal, classic. In the white category we have different ranges, like the bridal haute couture lingerie line where you have intricate, hand beaded gowns, dressing robes and bodies that are super beautiful. Or you can go towards the slightly less expensive things that are still incredibly beautiful pieces made using lace from France.

While you want that perfect bra and panty set for your wedding night, you can also look at a gown and robe on top of that. But if you want something a little more modern, you want a body or a babydoll under the robe. I would also say that your trousseau should include lingerie that you would wear under your wedding outfit. You need something that can be super smooth, fits really well but is still beautiful. You might want something for the next day that’s a little more colourful and playful. But I would say go with white on the night of your wedding. We have different options with belts and garters that are super sensual.

What are the most common questions asked on the shop floor when customers look for lingerie for special occasion?

I’ll tell you the things people ask and I’ll tell you the things people should ask. The most common question people ask is “Is this something I will wear underneath whatever I am wearing to the occasion?” and “Is there something that will look good on me?” Most of us have those spots in our body that we are not super comfortable showing. We all want something that makes us look beautiful on the special occasion. When it comes to lingerie, a lot of women have difficult relationships with their bodies.

But the one question that a lot of women don’t ask and they should is what I call ‘The Face Test’. When you buy lingerie, I always tell women to rub it against their face. Because the thing is, 15 minutes after you wear lingerie you realise it’s not comfortable, you’re going to wish you didn’t buy it. Traditionally lace is not stretch, it can be scratchy. We developed this thread that has stretch for our lingerie, which has resulted in this soft, luxurious lingerie that sits perfectly on your body.

What are the essentials of a bridal lingerie trousseau?

There’s going to be that day on your honeymoon when after partying and eating you will feel fat. I’d say go for a babydoll on a day like that. It is sensual but also offers coverage. I think it’s super important to have a corset that you can wear with a pair of pants or a skirt in the day, and at the end of the day wear it with a matching panty.

You should always haves a beautiful bra and panty set with a garter and thigh high stockings—it doesn’t get more elegant than that. I have designed something call the V-bra which I think every trousseau needs. A lot of dresses are low cut and you can’t wear a bra with them so you end up having to wear stick-ons. But the V-bra gives you complete support in the low-cut garment and it is wire free so it’s not uncomfortable. There’s also a strapless version of it.

Everyone likes to have shapewear for some clothes just for the sake of confidence. If you look at all shapewear, it looks the same and there’s something we have developed that looks like lace so once you take off your clothes, it looks amazing. It hasn’t hit the stores yet.

What are the common mistakes shoppers make when buying bridal lingerie and how can these be avoided?

Two things. Number one, they are buying it for a guy. If someone tells me that, I give them firm talking to. It’s great that you want to impress someone but in the end, the person who has to feel beautiful in it is you. If you like what you are wearing, you are immediately confident and that just looks attractive. No one wants to be with someone who’s insecure.

Mistake number two is when people don’t imagine what it will look like on their body. And for whatever reason they are uncomfortable with it, they won’t wear it again.

How do take care of special lingerie?

Most of the lingerie we make needs to be hand washed. Doesn’t mean they need to be dry cleaned. Just wash it with cool water and gentle soap.Read more at:wedding dresses brisbane | cheap wedding dresses melbourne
