The twenties was a glamorous era for fashion and that glamour has had a lasting impact on styles and trends throughout the decades. It was an exciting period of twinkling dresses, chic bob haircuts and women displaying their ankles for the first time!

Thanks to Baz Luhrmann, this luxurious style of clothing can be found on the high street once again and I for one think this is a fantastic new trend.

Baz Luhrmann Starts a Fashion Trend

The Great Gatsby may have been around for nearly ninety years, but it took Baz Luhrmann bringing the book to life on the big screen to trigger an explosion of glittering twenties glamour on our high streets.

The combined efforts of Tiffany & Co, Prada and French lace company, Solstiss created the dazzling array of costumes in the film. It took 1,400 metres of lace and 210 dress designs to create the whirl of colours and sequins at those incredible party scenes.

The film has already inspired shoppers just as much as fashion designers, with Debenhams reporting sales of vintage-inspired items soaring by 266%.

Glittering Twenties Fashion

If you haven’t seen the film, you may be wondering what’s so special about the ‘Gatsby look’. Well, the twenties was an era of jazz, glitz, glamour, fun and money. The American economy boomed after the First World War, leading to a more affluent lifestyle.

Women in this era dreamed of looking like the screen stars of the day and unsurprisingly, they still do in 2013. Movies and advertising spread glamorous new fashions and inspired a new look. Girls wearing these latest fashions were often called ‘flappers’. This was an era of sequins, pearls, feathers and dresses that were daringly short for the time.

At a 1920’s party there would be swinging jazz and corset-free women dancing and sparkling in the night. It is unsurprising that this luxurious lifestyle has inspired a new trend.

How to Get the ‘Gatsby’ Look…

Hair

The most sought after hairstyle in the twenties was the sleek and chic bob. Hair was smooth, silky and under control, usually shaped into the perfect bob-shape with a neat fringe – a look that would still look great today!

Women decorated their heads like sparkling birds of paradise with headbands, feathers and glittering hair slides.

Accessories

If you want to nod towards the 1920s ‘flappers’ without fully embracing the style, glittering accessories are a great way to add vintage glamour to your outfit.

Ornate, flowery hair slides, headbands, neck ties, pearl necklaces , feathers and scarfs are all great accessories and will make you sparkle with twenties glamour.

Dresses

The 1920s saw dresses change shape – styles with dropped waists, short hemlines and flattened busts were the bold new look. Dresses also became much shorter than before, although glamorous long fitted dresses were still very fashionable.

There are plenty of designs on the high street which nod towards the twenties with sequins, panels, art deco patterns and lace. Basically anything that will sparkle and glimmer in the moonlight is recreating the essence of twenties style.

Make-Up

You can recreate the look of the twenties with just a bit of make-up. Combine a creamy ivory foundation with a casino red lipstick and you’ll have the elegant and striking look of the twenties.

Lingerie

The Great Gatsby influence goes as far as lingerie. New trends are emerging which are heavily inspired by the twenties such as satin, silk and black lace lingerie as well the lace shorts and camisole combo.

You can really boost your natural bust in these beautiful silk lingerie styles with breast enhancement cream. The style at the time favoured a natural, feminine look and you can easily achieve this today.

With the twenties style, you can really go for it and get the full sparkling look, or you can just add some Gatsby-inspired accessories, hairdo, make-up or even lingerie. A few pearls or a touch of lace and you’ll be recreating the decadent flapper look of the twenties.
