It is everyone’s dream to have soft, supple and pink lips! But sometimes due to overuse of cosmetics, age or other medical issues, or just the simple drying of the lips, they tend to become darker. If you are suffering from something like this, don’t worry. We have a lot of home remedies that you can follow to get back your soft, pink lips that you have been dreaming of.

There are several reasons why some of us develop dark lips. Here are some of them:

  • Sun exposure
  • Use of cosmetics
  • Allergic reactions
  • Lip biting
  • Smoking
  • Coffee drinking
  • Vitamin deficiency

Here are some tried and tested home remedies for dark lips:

Lemon and sugar scrub

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

  • Mix all the ingredients together and rub it on your lips.
  • This mixture acts as a scrub and removes dry, flaky skin, while the acid in the lemon acts as a natural bleach

What you could also do is cut a slice of lemon, dip it in sugar and scrub your lips every night before going to sleep. Then wash your lips with lukewarm water, apply a heavy-duty lip balm and go to sleep. You will wake up with soft lips and gradually the darkness may reduce.

Tumeric  and milk pack

  • 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon of raw milk
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

  • Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Wet your lips and apply the same.
  • Leave this mixture overnight
  • Wash off with lukewarm water and apply a good lip balm

Studies indicate that turmeric acts as an inhibitor of melanin and milk is a natural soothing agent. You can also, take a cotton swab and apply raw milk to your lips every night before sleeping. This will not only help lighten your lips but will also help moisturise it on a regular basis.

Coconut oil lip treatment

Coconut oil is known for its nourishing and healing properties and it will help soothe the lip area. Here, we will give you a recipe that uses coconut milk and coconut oil.

  • 1 cup of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut milk
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

  • Use a hand whisk and whisk together all the above ingredients until they are well blended.
  • Apply the mixture on clean lips.
  • You can use this mixture throughout the day or as and when required.
  • You will see improvement with regular use over a period of time.

Rosewater and glycerine

Glycerine and rose water is another great combination and you will be able to get good results with this particular choice of lip treatment. It is not only a good home remedy but it is also highly cost-effective and will last you a long time.

  • 5 ml of rose water
  • 5 ml of glycerine
  • 2 ml of water

  • Mix all these ingredients together to form a mixture. Store it in a clean and dry container.
  • You can apply this whenever you want and also as often as you would like. The best thing to do is to carry the container in which you are storing the mixture in your handbag.

Pomegranate lip treatment

The pigments in pomegranate will help treat lip conditions such as darkness and pigmentation with regular use. Given below is a recipe that you can follow:

  • 1 tablespoon pomegranate juice
  • Fresh milk cream

  • Mix all the above ingredients in a clean and dry container.
  • Scrub your lips with the lemon and sugar scrub as stated above and wash your lips with warm water
  • After scrubbing your lips, apply the above mixture

Cocoa butter lip cream

This is a highly rich and nourishing lip treatment cream that repairs skin overnight. You will wake up to the softest and supple lips with this intensive treatment. Though this takes a little bit of time to make, it is worth the effort. Let me share with you the recipe.

  • 20 grams of pure organic shea butter
  • 10 grams of beeswax
  • 1 spoon of honey
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

  • Put the beeswax over a double boiler and wait until it melts. Then gradually add in the shea butter and let it also melt.
  • Take the container off the heat and add in the other ingredients.
  • Make sure you give it all a good whisk, to ensure all the ingredients are well incorporated.
  • Once done, pour the mixture in a clean and dry container.
  • Remember, this is a good recipe for a homemade lip balm and this can be stored for as long as you would like.

Cucumber lip pack

Cucumber is rich in antioxidants and is great for a hydrating lip pack that will also help fight against pigmentation. All you have to do is blend a few slices of cucumber into a coarse paste. After this, add in some honey and apply the mixture on to your lips. You can do this a couple of times a week to get the desired results.

Other tips:

Almond oil: Raw and organic almond oil has excellent nourishing properties and can be used to treat pigmentation on the lips. Apply some of this oil to your lips before going to bed.

Olive oil: Olive oil is another great remedy for dull, dark and even dry lips. The essential fatty acids in this oil help nourish and fight pigmentation.

Milk: Plain good old raw milk is a great solution to treat dark lips. The acids in milk make it a great solution to treat conditions such as these. You can also apply some fresh cream on your lips from time to time to fight dryness and hyperpigmentation.

Apart from all these above home remedies, you should also make sure you are using a lip balm on a regular basis to protect your lips. Also, remember that a lip balm with a good sunscreen is the most essential because it will protect you from the harmful rays of the sun, which, by the way, could be one of the causes of pigmentation.
