Hijab – Women’s Islamic Clothing

Typically, the hijab means head covering, modest religious dressing or veil used by the women of Islam. It is actually an Arabic word, meaning a curtain or cover. The term, in today’s age means a piece of clothing that is used by women of this community. This word has also been used in the Quran for referring to the curtain which divides to offer greater privacy. According to the Holy Book, all Muslims are instructed to address the SAW (Holy Prophet’s wives) from behind the hijab. Therefore, this term has been given the status of a divider or a curtain. Hijab’s concept as a piece of clothing is said to have developed much later through hadith and fiqh.

More about the hijab

The Quran is quoted to have used other words which are quite synonymous to the hijab like jilbab and askhimar. According to the holy book, Muslim women are not to reveal in public their beauty and hence are expected to dress in modesty. They are required to have their khimar drawn over their bosoms, thus keeping themselves fully covered. Hijab’s concept is said to have evolved over time. Also, its style, use and importance tends to vary depending upon cultural variations that is noticed the world over.

The hijab is known to retain religious significance in some places, while in others, its practice of wearing has been restricted to just few chosen situations. For example, in Saudi Arabia, the hijab is a must wear for women when moving in public. But in France and Turkey, it has been banned to be worn at educational institutions. Wearing dress the right way

Muslim women are expected to wear loose dresses covering completely their body, such that sexual attention is not drawn in any manner. Also, they need to use a shaylah, khimar or a scarf for covering their heads. Some scholars tend to differ upon the amount of clothing necessary for fulfilling the requirements of the hijab. Few agree at covering all the body parts, including the feet, hands and the face, while others allow women to have their hands and face to be exposed, while covering the other parts of the body. Hijab laws are stated to be flexible especially for young girls. In several regions, young girls are required to wear the hijab from puberty onwards.

Different styles

Hijab clothing can be found in different styles and designs. The differences are noticed mainly because of regional and cultural differences. Muslim women present in the subcontinent like Pakistan and India are noticed to wear Burqa, which is considered to be a 2 piece veil, comprising of head covering as well as a gown. It is black in color and there are also available other colors to suit style, taste and preference. Niqaab is also worn by women in this region, a veil which covers the face and head and falls right to the bosom.
