Halston IV 70′s gold caftan.

I tell everyone that when I get really old I’m going to start wearing caftans with the biggest Philip Johnson round glasses on the planet. So just wait. I love vintage caftans especially Halston ones.  Let me give you a brief history on kaftan or caftan.  The caftan is a simple garment that has been worn for thousands of years by both men & women. Originating in the Middle East, the caftan can be full or hip length.  Caftans can be worn loose or worn with a sash or belt.  Caftans were worn in ancient Persia like around 600 BC and then spread into Eastern Europe and Russia. Caftans reached its zenith in magnificence in the early Ottoman Empire.  Caftans were often given to visiting nobles and men of great influence.  They were loved and worn in Northern Africa and since Yves Saint Laurent was born in Algeria, he designed caftans in the 60′s and became popular as hostess gowns, worn for both formal and casual parties…. Christian Dior did introduce an open fronted version of the caftan in the 50′s.  Elizabeth Taylor made the caftan a fashion staple in fact she worn one to her second wedding to Richard Burton.  Her love of caftans became as much apart of her allure as her famously violet eyes and several of Taylor’s caftans were offered up at the Christie’s auction of her clothing & jewelry in 2011.
