Eyewear is one of the great unplumbed depths of fashion. We all as human beings are preconditioned to look each other in the eye when we interact, which makes the eye area a perfect place to accessorize and show off who we are. But so few people actually take the time to employ any eye wear beyond prescription lenses or a bit of makeup. There's a change in the air, and soon, the fashion world will be ecstatic about exemplary eyewear. Here are 5 eyewear trends poised to grip the fashion world, courtesy of The Eyewear Place.

1. Smartglasses are an intelligent choice.

Science fiction has been showing us computer screens in our glasses for decades. Now that they've been invented for real, it's only a matter of time-- and money-- before they become as ubiquitous as phones are now. A pair of smartglasses is still outside of most people's budget, but in a few years, cheaper brands will start to emerge.

2. Veils give a wearer mystique.

In the New Tens uproar over privacy and surveillance, many folks have rankled at the idea that cameras with facial recognition software let advertisers track your every move just so they can deluge you with adverts for things you've been seen near. A veil with a distinct pattern can foil the face-recognizing software, so you can keep control over how social media sees you.

3. Steampunk goggles are boiling hot!

The steampunk aesthetic has been "building up steam" for the past several years now, and is just about ready to make it to the mainstream on the back of modern culture's celebration of all things nerdy. A top hat or newsboy's cap, paired with a thick pair of industrial goggles is the iconic symbol of the style. Steampunk goggles have even made their way onto television, with Gotham star Camren Bicondova dawning a pair as Selina Kyle, AKA Cat Woman.

4. Lennon-style shades are (just like) starting over.

Fads move in cycles, and every generation loves the fads of forty or so years prior. Still within living memory but long enough ago to be romanticized, the sixties are overdue for a retro revival, and John Lennon's signature shades are one of the decade's most recognizable symbols of one of its most beloved pop culture icons. Current celebrities sporting Lennon-style shades include Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Kate Moss.

5. Colored contacts will change the way you see the world.

Film makers, costumers, and the like have been using colored contacts for so long, it's a wonder they never got popular earlier. With tattoos, plastic surgery, and other body modifications gaining in public acceptance, it's only natural that eye color is the next customization option. Fashion icon and supermodel Naomi Campbell often switches her contacts from brown to blue, depending on the whether she’s going with brunette or blonde hair.

There is little doubt that eyewear trends have evolved dramatically over the years. While some trends are fresh and new, some have made a bold and beautiful return. The 5 trends listed above are on the tip of the iceberg in what should be an incredibly memorable decade for eyewear fashion!
