Flattering Indian Churidars

Churidars, also spelled chudidar or churidaar, are Indian trousers that have a snug fit and are usually worn with kurtas or kurtis. These pants are made in such a way that they are longer than the length of the leg and the tight fitting is achieved by tailoring the ends of the pants at an angle of 45 degrees against the grain of the fabric. The name Churidar is derived from the Hindi word for Bangles i.e. Churi which denotes the circular gathers that form at the ankles when one wears a churidar pajama.

In those times the churidar pajama was worn predominantly by men but also by women. It is only a phenomenon of recent times that the trend has reversed. Ethnic men’s wear such as Sherwanis and kurta pajamas generally use the churidar pants for men.

Although, women from around the country wear churidar pants, it is generally preferred by women in North India as well as Pakistan. There is no restriction in terms of the fabric that can be used to create churidar. The chosen fabric largely depends on the season and the occasion it is worn for. As such, churidar pants can be created from cotton, silk, georgette and brocade silk. The maintenance of the churidar pants is dependent majorly upon the fabric.

Churidar bottoms are very versatile in the sense that they are suitable for a number of looks such as to the office, to parties, with anarkali suits to special occasions like weddings and even under traditional kurtas for religious festivals.
