The time has come when the votes have been cast and the result is in. No I’m not talking about the general election but another equally disastrous poll, the FHM 100 sexiest women in the world poll. Whilst Gordon Brown loses his position as PM, queen of chavs Cheryl Cole has managed to keep her place at the top of the poll for a second consecutive year.
In at number two is the equally vile Megan Fox, while the rest of the poll is made up of chavs, slags, glamour models and wags with the likes of Abbey Clancy, Kelly Brook, topless model Keeley Hazell and N-dubz star Tulisa all positioned within the top 15. Is this really what men like, cheap looking girls who have more hair extensions than brain cells? And most of all where are all the trendy girls who are not only sexy and pretty, but talented, creative and actually use their brains instead of their boobs to further their careers?
Lady Gaga no-92, Sienna Miller no-88, Lily Allen no-71, Pixie Lott no-45, not only make up the polls fashionistas but are all notably positioned outside the top 40. Even more frustrating is the absence of sexy trend setters Kate Moss, Fearne Cotton, Alexa Chung , Agyness Deyn and Pixie Geldof (I know the Geldofs are annoying but Pixie is pretty girl with some awesome clobber).
So why is it that anyone with a sense of fashion, taste and creativity is destined to perform so poorly is these ridiculous rankings of attractiveness, whilst girls who would be shopping in TK Maxx and drinking in Yates had they not found fame are considered sexy?
Well firstly men are simple creatures who can not see beyond the obvious clichés. Individuality is something we tend to celebrate in theory but when it is actually in front of our very own eyes, a la Lady Gaga, we don’t know what to make of it. However whilst us girls eventually warm to it, men appear even more intimidated.
Here is an example that best describes my point. When I was at school I really wanted a Baby G watch (remember them, they were awfully bulky) because everyone else wanted one. By the time my wish was granted everyone had one and my watch was no longer special (but still really cool). Now I would rather buy a vintage watch that I know no one else will have so I know my watch is special even if no one else likes it. Whilst women get older, they become more confident in expressing themselves in a way that doesn’t matter to anyone else. Men however will still want that Baby G watch (or Nike Trainers in their case) because their mates have them, which makes them blend in.
The same thing applies to the girls they like. They are drawn to girls like Cheryl Cole for their cliché ideas of sexiness (fake tan, hair extensions, make-up, revealing clothes, you get the idea) and the fact they would be the envy of their mates who only see these girls as nothing more than a piece of meat, fit but disposable. But girls like Fearne Cotton and Alexa Chung who not only have a wicked sense of fashion, but are also pretty, smart, witty, creative and career driven may prove too much of a threat for the simple readers of FHM to bear. Well I know which one I would rather be and it aint Cheryl Cole.
