Oliveira Baptista has a new client with an ideal figure that will never change — and without any interest in see-now-buy-now.
He is to dress “Marie,” a sculpture by Portuguese artist Julião Sarmento being unveiled this week in the exterior courtyard of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Paris.
Sarmento created the figure of a woman using a robotic router that carved the likeness of a 3-D scan of a model into a block of resin, excepting facial features. Baptista’s dress for the sculpture will be subject to rain, wind and sun, and the designer, perhaps best known as Lacoste’s artistic director, agreed to create a new one once the elements have taken their toll. Talk about “in-season” design.
