When you move into a new home, it’s tempting to rush and decorate the whole thing right away. You don’t want to have any empty or unfinished spaces. However, it is often best to take your time and decorate as inspiration strikes. You don’t want to end up with mediocre furniture that you bought only because it was available at the time. Here are some ways to help you make better, more considered decisions when furnishing your home.

Making Space

If you have limited space or are living in a studio apartment, consider using room dividers. It makes a huge difference to have your kitchen area separated from your bed by a physical barrier. The dividers are often decorative in and of themselves. You can find wooden dividers with engravings on them, as well as canvas dividers covered in painted landscapes.

Clothing Storage

You could also use clothing racks to create defined spaces in a small home. This tip is especially useful if you have limited closet space. Fill a garment rack with some of your favorite clothes and position it creatively. You could use clothes that are all black or are coordinated in some other way. This is a fun way to decorate your home using things you already own.

Storage Trunk

A vintage-style trunk goes a long way toward adding a lived-in air to your space. Place it at the foot of your bed or underneath a window and use it to store shoes, winter sweaters, books and other odds and ends. It doubles as a bench, making it one of the most useful types of furniture you can buy.

A Beauty Room

Beauty rooms are ubiquitous on YouTube, where beauty gurus post videos of themselves trying on makeup. You probably don’t need a whole room dedicated to your beauty products, but you might enjoy having a pretty vanity table with a nice mirror. Some people feel that starting their morning with a little bit of pampering helps them get through the workday more quickly. A vanity is a small luxury that just might brighten your day on a regular basis.

Unconventional Furniture

Don’t feel pressured to get a full dining room set if you don’t see yourself hosting large dinners. Along the same lines, you don’t have to buy a hallway trinket table if it’s only going to get in the way. A kitchen cart is a small collapsible table with stools that tuck underneath it. When placed flat against a wall, it looks like a bar cart. When the table leaf is propped up and the stools are set out, it looks like a full kitchen table. This is just one example of the innovative furniture pieces you can find if you take the time to really look at your options.

You could try working with a modern retailer like Visions In Contemporary Living or someone similar to get an idea of what options you have. This can also be helpful for ensuring that all of your furniture works well together.

Don’t let your home decorating be stressful! Use it as an opportunity to express your artistic vision and to create the kind of home that you enjoy living in.
