History of Gothic subculture

Gothic sub-culture evolved in England in the 1980s, after the decline of the Punk culture. The term “Gothic” has evolved from the Goth tribes of East Germanic origin, who lived around Crimea. However, later on, this became a generic term and spread to art and architecture, fashion, clothing across Europe.

Gothic Clothing for Women

Gothic fashion line for women implies to under and over bust corsets, long sleeved shirts, dresses, robes, capes, long coats and laced trousers. The Gothic clothing is recognized by the abundance of black nets, velvets, frills, and laces. Apart from black, the other dark colors which are part of this clothing are gray, brown, deep blue and scarlet. Sometimes, white is also used to give contrast to the darker shades. Gothic corsets and pirate shirts inspired by the Gothic culture follow the main fashion style of this subculture.

  1. Haute Goth — The term “Haute Goth” was coined by Cintra Wilson in New York Times when designers dressed runway women with Gothic elements in the haute couture.
  2. Gothic Lolita –Is also named as GothLoli or Loligoth. It is a sub-genre of Lolita fashion in Japan and is a combination of Goth and Lolita fashion. A Gothic Lolita woman wears dark makeup with dark clothes having lots of frills, bonnets, and puffy skirt to give herself a look of a Victorian Doll.

Aristocrat — Aristocrat fashion is influenced by Gothic and Neo-Victorian fashions. The aristocrat clothing includes dark coloured long sleeve blouses, shirts, long skirts, corsets, pants pants and dresses clubbed with dark makeup.
