A whole makeup look is never completed without some good, ol’ enhancement of the eyes. Eyeliners are probably the most effective makeup piece that can create a bold, dramatic look or sensual and discreet look of your eyes. It has such a strong effect that makeup artists use it in various creative ways to put the focus on the eyes. One of these ways is creating the perfect wings.

If you are a beginner at putting makeup or you can do your eyes well but are far from being a pro, I  have 4 ways to show you how to do them flawlessly. Since I am well aware that you can make many mistakes before getting to the point that you can create your equal-sized and shaped wings (believe me, I’ve been there), let me show you several ways that you can try.

1. Wings with Tape

It might seem funny, but it really works. You can use some scotch tape to help you draw perfect winged eyeliner lines. You should cut some tape (about 2cm) and stick it along the outer edge of the eyes. Decide the angle you want your wings to be and stick the tapes in that direction. Then, take your eyeliner and trace along the tape to draw the wing. Us the outlines of the tape to guide you. DO the finishing touch – finish it off by extending the line along the upper lash line.

1. Wings with a Spoon

Here is one more role of the spoon besides using it for eating. Take a spoon and place the straight edge of the handle and the curve of the spoon to the eye area where you want the wings. Draw a straight line following the line of the handle. Next, use the rounded part of the spoon and cup your eyelids. Use the eyeliner the create the curvy tip of the wing. The final step is filling in the space between the two lines and drawing one on the upper lashes.

1. Wings with a Business Card

Take a business card from your bag that you won’t probably need and draw a line on it that will match the size of your eyes. Next, cut out the pattern and place the card with the gap above your eye. Use the cut out as a stencil to draw the wings.

1. Use an Eyeliner with Stamps

Another very effective way of getting those perfect wings is by using an eyeliner with stamps. There are liquid eyeliners that one side they have a felt-tip eyeliner whereas on the other there is a stamp of a wing. What you do with it is use the best eyeliner for wings to draw the line to the end of the eyelid and then use the stamp to create a wing. Next, connect the lines with the eyeliner. Or you can do it vice-versa: first stamp, then line. The great thing about this is that you can choose the size of the wing - how wide you want it and pick the appropriate size – 8mm, 10mm or 12mm. In that way, you will be able to create petite, modest or grand size eyeliner wing.

The Bottom Line

Don’t be afraid to experiment until you get better. Just make sure you don’t do the experimenting right before an important event, going out or occasion where you need to be makeup perfect ready. Practise in your free time and find out which of these ways will best work for you.
