Indian men’s wear is a highly underutilized clothing category in men’s wear. Since most men opt for Western clothing for their daily use, Indian men clothing items are few and far between. When defining Indian outfits for men, the first thing that comes to mind are kurta pajamas. Essentially, this is the basic style upon which most forms of Indian men’s wear are based.
The pajamas worn by men are usually in the churidar style. The fabrics that are used to make Indian wear for men can be cotton, linen and muslin for the summer months, silk and velvet for special occasions like weddings and even for the winter months. There is no restriction on the kind of embellishments that ethnic men’s wear can have. It can be a traditional craft like Chikankari or modern prints. These designs and embellishments depend on the purpose of the garment. For instance, semi formal or casual Indian men’s wear is bound to showcase embellishments only on the collar, placket and the cuffs of the sleeves. Formal wear ethnic Indian outfits on the other hand feature heavy embroidery and other forms of embellishments all over the upper garment. In addition, brocade fabrics are used in order to add texture and a grander visual effect. In fact, the Sherwani is among the most popular men’s Indian wedding outfits, and has been since the late 2000s.
The other basic style is the dhoti and kurta. Although the dhoti is prominent in South India and at times in men’s Indian wedding outfits’ designer collections, it is not purchased as widely as the kurta pajama and its variants.
