Decoding Popular Prison Tattoos

Starting from barbed wire to a cobweb design, prison tattoos have been gaining popularity and notoriety in recent years as these motifs have become highly sought after as a representation of masculine characteristics. A few significant examples of regularly seen prison tattoo designs include

  • Barbed Wire

The inspiration of a barbed wire tattoo comes from the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. It represents that no matter how many hardships a person might face in their life, they can withstand anything by having faith in the Almighty.

  • Cobweb

A cobweb design is often positioned on a man’s elbow and depicts how we all are trapped in a complex network of beliefs and concepts.

  • Three Dots

The three dot tattoo, with the dots positioned at each corner of a triangle, is a representation of ‘my crazy life’ and is drawn prominently on one’s hand or around eyes. The three dots could also indicate the Holy Trinity, which means the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit incorporated into a single entity.

  • EWMN and ACAB

Publicised in 1955, the letters EWMN stand for Evil, Wicked, Mean and Nasty respectively. Often inked on the knuckles, this tattoo does not show affiliation with any gang but signifies disposition of inmates in general.

The letters ACAB stands for Always Carry A Bible and are also tattooed on the knuckles. These letters symbolise a distinct willingness to join a specific group for rebelling against conventional notions of society.

  • Teardrop

A teardrop is the most widely acknowledged prison tattoo, and while its origins are from decades ago, it has gained infamy only recently. It means a prisoner’s gang member was murdered and they are seeking revenge. Many celebrities nowadays are getting this motif because it is aesthetically pleasing.

  • Cross

A cross is often inked on one’s chest denoting extreme anger towards the privileged sections, who try dominating and taking advantage of the lower classes.

Prison tattoos are becoming a high demand design as these motifs are notarised in popular culture. As with any tattoo, you should choose the studio wisely to ensure the best tattoo on the Gold Coast.
