Cool holiday style for our moody climate

Dazzling, cozy holiday styles are cute for most of the country – sparkly sweaters and textured hats keep you warm in winter temps. However, in Acadiana, if you wear a sparkly sweater in 70 degrees, you may look a bit ridiculous.

Getting glamorous for an upcoming holiday party doesn’t have to be so tricky.

Kaitlyn Lacombe, from local boutique, Shop Three Little Birds weighs in on what’s hot right now, how to adjust winter trends for our warm climate and mix in festive holiday pieces to create looks to last the whole year.

Pick a statement piece

Ultimately, your chosen look will depend on the dress code of the event, but Kaitlyn recommends choosing a statement piece and working around it.

“There are several ways take a classic dress and dress it up or down to fit your needs,” says Kaitlyn. “We suggest finding your dress first, let the dress be your statement and choose understated accessories to go with it.”

Find the balance

A great outfit in any season is all about balance. A large, sparkly statement necklace competes with an attention-grabbing, sparkly dress and bright heels. Keep it simple.

Kaitlyn adds, “Stay away from adding large statement necklaces if you choose to go sparkly with your dress.”

On the other hand, that same necklace can dress up a basic outfit. Add in a pair of statement tights and you’ve got a fresh new look.

Look for texture

This time of year textures like lace, shimmer and faux fur are favorites. Try working in textured pieces in small amounts.

A lace cardigan or bright red shimmery skirt can compliment a classic sweater or simple tank. Look for textures with fine detail and rich colors.

“Deep or striking colors are the perfect way to achieve a beautiful holiday look,” says Kaitlyn. Popular hues for this holiday season are hot whites, shades of gold, jewel tones such as burgundy and of course, striking reds.

Watch the weather

Here in Louisiana, it can be 25 degrees or 75 degrees this time of year.

With the warm winter trend of late, opting for an outfit that can be easily layered or adjusted for last minute weather shifts is a good idea.

Pair a sleek pleather jacket with a frilly dress for an added layer of warmth and a masculine touch. Don’t forget about the shoes! Slinky, open-toed heels can be swapped out for boots if you’re in a pinch.

“There are tons of great booties floating around Lafayette that can be added to get the perfect holiday look!” suggests Kaitlyn.
