Cherry Village hosts back-to-school fashion show for residents

Not only did the youngsters get to sport their new back-to-school clothes, they had the opportunity to participate in a fashion show for a welcoming audience.

Some Cherry Village Benevolence staff members recruited their children and grandchildren for the event that was popular with residents at the long-term-care facility, said Shelly Estes, activity director.

“The residents here were excited to see the kids in their new school outfits and wearing their backpacks,” Estes said. “Anytime they can interact with the younger generation, it is a huge plus.

“Social interaction is so important for our residents,” she added. “This turned out to be a fun event for them, as well as for the children.”

The 10 girls and boys who took to the stage and runway for the fashion show range from preschool on up to middle-school age.

“It was obvious the kids were enjoying themselves,” Estes said. “Some might have been a little apprehensive at first because they might not have an older person in their lives.”

Estes recalled a previous Cherry Village event that involved 20 children, and only one of them had a family member in a long-term-care facility.

“But even if they are a bit nervous at first, it doesn’t take long for them to loosen up and just have a good time,” she said. “They see the residents’ smiles, which are contagious.”

The youngsters also enjoyed the music that played during the show, the badges they received and the refreshments that were served.

A few of the residents’ family members also attended the back-to-school fashion show.

“We love it when family members are here anytime,” Estes commented. “Our residents love to see familiar faces, along with the new ones. Visits from family and friends mean more than you may realize.”

Cherry Village, 1401 Cherry Lane, is a non-profit facility that is managed by a local family.
