Charli XCX & Her Makeup Artist

Charli XCX Interview Makeup Forever

As the new face behind Make Up For Ever, singer Charli XCX is bringing us music festival beauty tips just in time for the season. From the exact eyeliners that will give you her blue ombré cat eye to festival essentials, see Charli and her makeup artist’s must-haves.

When it comes to the music festival scene, Charli XCX, 23, has performed at every major event you can think of. From the UK’s Glastonbury to NYC’s Governors Ball, you can trust that Charli, who has a penchant for bold lips and even bolder cat eyes, knows about the importance of makeup with staying power. That’s one (of the very many) reasons she and her makeup partner in crime, Colby Smith, teamed up with Make Up For Ever and their new Aqua XL Eye Pencils (available May 2 for $21 each). As vibrant as the pop singer herself, the liners come in 20 different shades, with matte, satin, iridescent, diamond and metallic finishes.

When it comes to the new XL’s long-lasting and waterproof formula, Charli tells us there’s no comparison to any other liner she’s used. “I’ve been performing on stage since I was 14-years-old, and when I perform, I sweat. I go hard, and I really struggled to find the perfect product for me. My signature look is a winged liner and every time I’d go on stage my face would melt. Then [Make Up For Ever] came with the Aqua XL and I said ‘That’s it!’. It’s perfect — it’s vibrant, it’s every color I would ever dream of wearing onstage and it stays on for a whole show.”

Rocking one of the coolest cat eyes we’ve ever seen — blue ombré — when we caught up with Charli and Colby, they let us in on exactly how to recreate her look (after a performance of her pop hit, “Boom Clap,” obviously). For her blue ombré eye, Colby started with the metallic turquoise eye pencil, shade I24, to create a thick classic cat eye shape. “Then in the outer corner, we deepened it and made a little bit of an ombré with M22,” Colby tells us. “Then to shadow out the bottom lash line so there is a little bit of depth, very subtly with a fluffy brush I [added] S20. And then to give a little bit of highlight to that wing, and right below the eye [I added] a little spot of color with the baby blue pastel, M26.”

If you’re wary of trying out such bold hues, Charli says you’re not alone. “When I was younger, I just used to only wear black eyeliner, and I would have never thought about wearing yellow on my eyes,” she says. “But when you pair it with the right thing, it becomes really appealing and really easy to wear. It’s completely another way to express yourself rather than just your clothes or what you say — it’s a whole nother dimension,” she adds.

But if you want to ease your way into the brighter, metallic shades (or just incorporate a little bit of the festival scene into your everyday look), Colby has a simple solution. “I think the easiest, foolproof way to wear these brighter pastels is to do your makeup normally,” he says. “And then, just take that color on the waterline and pop it right in there. It brightens the eye up and gives a little hint of color,” he insists, while Charli jumps in that the lavender has been Colby’s go-to shade for creating this look.

And as for the festival essentials you should be stocking up on — aside from keeping your Aqua Eyes at the ready, Charli’s other top picks are slightly less glamorous. ” I’d bring glitter, baby wipes and your own roll of toilet roll maybe,” she says. “Oh, and Gatorade! That’s the ultimate hangover cure, but it’s got to be the blue,” she adds with a laugh. Consider coordinating your Gatorade to your eyeliner Charli XCX-approved.
