Can’t rain on my style

We have said goodbye to every item of clothing that kept us snug during the pleasant weather we enjoyed the last couple of months. And while plunging necklines and rising hemlines just began making a heady statement, the sudden showers of blessing have left many in a muddle. Just when we thought we were bang in the middle of summer, it feels like the monsoons are back already. So if you’re among those who could do with styling advice from the fashion experts, here’s all you need to know about dressing appropriately for the summer showers.

“Bangalore is really at its best right now,” finds stylist and fashion blogger, Pranita Mehta. “The unexpected change in weather has left everyone in a dilemma of what to wear and what not to. While fashion trends are revolving around the summer season, there are those making their own trends to suit the season,” she adds.

The rains have brought about the need for layering up again. “Women can take to light layering of kimono shrugs, crop tops over dresses or maxis, culottes, denim shorts, denim-on-denim looks, vibrant tropical and floral prints, and the print-on-print mania which are trends suited for this summer monsoon,” adds Pranita.

Neelima Lal, designer of the fashion label Aakarr, recommends flaunting “bolero jackets, smart capes, cropped pants and stoles instead of flowing skirts and palazzos which can be worn on sunnier days. Cuts will be basic straight cuts instead of flairs to make it less messy.”

According to the former, “Shirts over tees, tropical-inspired prints, bomber jackets, and suit separates are some summer trends that men could still flaunt,” while Neelima endorses “lightweight bomber jackets and wind breakers for men. On an overcast day when the sun is at rest, full sleeve shirts, and denims are a great option, she believes.

In terms of appropriate fabrics for this passing fashion season, Niyati Manoj, a freelance designer, says: “Cotton is the best as it dries fast. You could also opt for chambrays for the same reason. It would be best to save your denims for dryer days.”

While you would normally expect the summer fashion palette to border on pastels and whites, Pranita says: “This is the perfect time to bring out your pastels as well as your loud colour combos, without going over the top, of course. The monochrome look is trending. Vivid prints, timeless florals, free-flowing silhouettes, and 70s-inspired details like fringes, tie-and-dye sound perfect even for the monsoon.” And if you’re not sure of what needs to stay in your wardrobe till the rains are gone, she says, “Save your whites for later. You can rock them when the sun is out again. Leather and suede accessories such as shoes and bags are also best left indoors.”

Coming to accessories, “weather-proof jackets in vibrant colours that also influence your otherwise neutral look, umbrellas, hats, and scarves to keep you a little cosy, and shoes that can be cleaned with a wet wipe, are some smart ways to stay stylish in the rains,” she divulges.

Neelima says, “It is always best to go in for minimal accessories during the summer but with the rains making their presence felt, bring out those chunky beaded neck pieces and wear covered footwear to protect your feet. Boots would be great too.”

With all the advice from the fashion police, looking rain ready isn’t such a big deal after all, is it?
