Crystal is derived from the German word ‘Krustallos’ and was earlier used to refer to quartz or rock crystal. Crystal is also associated with metaphysics and is therefore very popular in spiritual and astrologically significant items. It is said to possess energy, help in meditation, offer healing and protection along with the ability to store information. Wearing crystals is said to have a balancing effect on negative auras and energies. Crystals are found in a number of different colors and in India are generally used to make costume jewelry, create decorative pieces, embellish handicrafts and in astrologically significant finger rings. Among those that have a spiritual meaning attached to them are Black Tourmaline, Agate, Celestite, Lapis Lazuli, Bloodstone, Moldavite and Garnet.
 The beauty of crystals is that they go with a myriad of garments, right from the traditional sarees and salwar kameez to Indo-Western outfits such as jeans and skirts paired with t-shirts or blouses. While more suited to formal wear, crystal jewelry is mostly universal and lends a stately and dignified appearance to the wearer.

In India, crystals are also used to embellish dresses along with creating fashion jewelry. Zircon is perhaps one of the better known crystals in India. In fact, zircon (which is a type of crystal) is often used in Kundan jewelry. Fine zircons are also turned into Swarovski crystals by polishing them extensively. As opposed to diamonds, crystals are a lot more affordable and have a similar sheen and shine that they lend to the ensemble. It is for this reason that Swarovski crystals are so popular in India.
Besides these finely polished crystals, Tibetan crystals and jewelry made from them is also very popular and India supports a large market for the same. These pieces use silver as a base and are available as earrings, pendants, chunky necklaces and finger rings.
