Beautiful Armlets or Bajubands

Armlets or Bajubands are one of the most traditional forms of adornments that are found in India. These ornaments were first introduced in India by Bharatnatyam dancers in the Dravidian region, thereby making it an accessory for men. In fact, soldiers would sport sturdy Bajubands made of pure gold or silver. It was only later, that these were adapted for women’s usage as well. Even then, these were available in pairs to be donned by rural folk, especially couples. Besides India, influences of the Greek culture can also be seen in this accessory as many Greek Gods are also seen wearing them.

Stone Studded BajubandOriginally these were only crafted using precious metals and were distinguishable as the heavier, thicker ones were meant for men while the delicate ones were worn by women. In modern times, Bajubands for men have become obsolete while women popularly sport this jewelry piece on special occasions. It is also commonly identified as bridal jewelry. However, this is not to restrict their usage as it is also a popular piece of fashion cum costume jewelry. When it is meant for regular wear, it is usually crafted from oxidized metals such as silver and has intricate designs within the metal itself. The bridal and occasion-wear varieties are generally made of precious metals inlaid with precious or semi-precious stones. These can also be crafted in traditional jewelry styles such as Kundan, Polki and Meenakari.

Modern styles and varieties have basically been introduced by designers and there is no restriction on the motifs and materials it can showcase. Right from abstract and geometric designs to motifs of animals such as peacocks, snakes and crocodiles as well as mythical creatures such as dragons, make it suitable for special occasions. Women prefer pairing the Baajuband with traditional attire such as sarees and lehenga cholis, although they might be in modern, designer styles.
