Aussie Rules: No More Skinny Models… Period

Supermodels have had a longtime rep for being outrageously tall and stick-thin. Although the skinny silhouettes still dominate the fashion industry, we’ve come a long way since then with the rise of curvier supermodels like Christine Brinkley, Heidi Klum, and Karolina Kurkova (who by the way, remained in high demand despite the fact the Brazilian press claimed she had “too much back fat”). Shows like America’s Next Top Model Plus Size reality series also put the typical model standards on the forefront. But now the Aussies are raising the issue with new codes for the fashion industry
that may change the way we know the faces and bodies behind the glamorous runways and glossy magazines. The Australian Telegraph reports Prime Minister Kate Ellis released a new plan to address the “body image” matter from all sides of the spectrum. This includes asking magazines to phase out
cosmetic surgery ads and asking designers not to hire skinny models with a low body mass index (BMI) and even male models who are “excessively muscular.”
