For me, there has been no more glamorous decade than the 'roaring' 1920s. It was the first time when dramatic, obvious makeup was worn by women, the first time for centuries when it became fashionable to cut your hair short, and the first time for a while that less actually wasn't more.

If you've been invited to a 1920s themed party or wedding (or you're planning one yourself!), here's how to get that iconic flapper girl look without it seeming too costume-y...

The Outfit

The 1920’s was a rebellious time for women and this should be reflected in every aspect of your outfit – so be as confident and fiery as the women of the era would have been!

Flapper dresses were shiny, loose and eye-catching. Often, they were covered in tassels, which shimmered and swayed while you danced. And as for shoes, the popular choice at the time would have been a pair of Mary Jane heels. They do not have a particularly high heel, which makes them comfortable and easy on your feet whilst you're dancing the night away!

The Hair

Before the 1920s, the trend for women’s hair-dos was to have your hair up in chic, classy style but with the 1920’s came a new hairstyle - the bob. If you already have pretty short hair, then this is will be an easy job! Here's some inspiration on how to style it.

If not, and you’re not willing to go the extra mile to actually cut your hair, pinning or tucking loose curls under an embellished headband will do the trick. Miss S-a on Etsy does some gorgeous ones!

The Accessories

As with every other part of ladies’ outfits in the twenties, jewellery was extravagant and boldly coloured.  Long strands of beads would be worn over the dress, with large earrings dangling below the bob.

Women’s hats and headbands would include dangling embellishments too - tassels, beads and ribbons would hang down on either side of the women’s face. This is the perfect chance to go wild and deck yourself out like a Christmas tree - but stylishly of course!

The Makeup

The makeup of the era was bold and dark, exaggerating the women’s eyes and lips, so forget about this being a beauty no-no. As a contrast to the bold eye make-up, a pale complexion was in fashion, so make sure you get some creamy ivory coloured foundation for the big night. There are a bunch of 1920s makeup tutorials here for more specific tips.

The finishing touch? Chanel No.5, introduced to the fashion world in 1921!
