Anti-Acne Diet

There's a very stubborn enemy to what should be a teenager's clear skin. It's acne. It erupts on nearly everyone's face at some time, and seriously affects more than half of all adolescents for some years of their life.

But breakthroughs in the control of acne are making treatment more and more effective. One factor already established is the major importance of diet. You should, however, check with your family doctor before you begin any set diet.

A diet for acne-prone skin must be consistently high in protein and fresh, raw fruit and vegetables.

There are three rules to observe in the Anti-acne Diet:

1. You must never eat chocolate or any foods or drinks made with cocoa. There is definite link between chocolate and pimples.

2. Avoid fried and fatty foods in general. You don't have to be fanatical about this, as some favorites like chips are allowed in the diet.

3. Avoid starchy foods. No cakes, biscuits, sweets, bread or jams.

Keep to those rules and you won't feel you're missing a thing. Remember to eat the foods that are good for you. Protein is a major acne-fighter. Eat it in fish, poultry and egg-white. In following the Anti-acne Diet, if you feel you simply must eat something, have a favorite fruit drink and mix into it a tablespoon of gelatin. Gelatin is pure protein and acts as a filler in the stomach. Fingernails get a bonus too.

Our Anti-acne Diet has been worked out to give you a really clear skin and a good figure too. But you don't miss out on delights like hamburgers, avocados, roast lamb, or baked apples with custard.

Follow the diet for five days then stop. See the improvement then start the diet again. Soon you will have re-educated your eating habits away from the bad foods to the good ones.

If you have ever shopped for acne treatments you will know there are dozens of ways to fight off blemishes.

But the latest deals with an old problem in an exciting new way. It means fighting acne internally instead of externally. Most cases can now be completely cured.

Antibiotics fight infection and therefore pimples; a healthy diet puts your metabolism in tip top shape and emotional tranquility will ward off skin eruptions.

You get pimples because tiny oil-producing glands, numerous on the face, neck, chest and back, are under direct hormonal influence. The trouble begins during teenage years with the development of adult sexual characteristics.

The glands often become over-productive and churn out a needless amount of oil. Soon whiteheads appear. Later they become blackheads and sometimes cysts. They can leave noticeable scars if not effectively treated.

The most effective and widely-used antibiotic is called tetracycline. It is taken as a capsule before every meal (sometimes the capsule dose is higher) and acts by slowing down production in the oil-producing sebaceous glands. This stops the eruption of pimples. As the condition improves the dose is reduced to two or one capsule a day.

Another newcomer is called Benzoyl peroxide. Applied each morning to the affected areas it can produce excellent results. Care must be taken to keep it away from eyes and lips.

Older forms of therapy still have a lot going for them. Cleanliness is the key. Wash the face with soap and water each morning and night.

Obvious blackheads may be got rid of by soft pressure. Some doctors claim this may lead to infection but when a "comedone extractor" (a pencil-like gadget with a hole in the centre) is used, it is safe.

Do beware of over using cleansers containing large amounts of bacteria-killing substances (such as hexachlorophene). They can actually aggravate pimple formation.

Go lightly on cosmetics and you will not clog the facial pores and aggravate the acne condition. Drink plenty of fluids (at least eight glasses of water a day) but don't eat a lot of spicy foods such as curries.

Hormonal pills work in either of two ways on acne. Sometimes they aggravate and sometimes assist the condition. Only experimentation will tell you.

If you want to attack your acne, assess all the factors. Your diet, lifestyle, the medication you take. Get the assistance of your family doctor and you will overcome the condition.
