An Overview of the Burka

Burka is also spelled as the burqa, and it is commonly known as a paranja in Central Asia, or chadaree in Afghanistan. This is an outer enveloping garment that is designed to cover the face and also the body. It is mostly worn by women in different Islamic cultures and traditions. It is important to note that Boshiya is the Arab version of the burka. However, it is usually colored black. A lot of people often conflate burka with the niqab because of the similarities they have. However, it is important to note that they are completely different pieces. The niqab leaves only the eyes uncovered, unlike with burka in which there is no part of the body that is left uncovered. This leaves one to wonder how the wearer will see since the Burka covers every part of the body. There is a provision for a mesh screen with the Burka, which allows the wearer to have a vision of where she's going.

Another thing to note is that the burka should not be confused with the Hijab because the Hijab does not cover the face, rather it focuses on covering the neck, hair, and part or all of the chest, unlike the burka. All the different types of face veils, including the burka, have been attested right from the pre-Islamic period. Initially, face veiling or using other coverings wasn't a religious requirement for most Islamic scholars. Things changed with time, and some Islamic scholars, including those of the Salafi movement, began to regard face veiling as a requirement and also an obligation for every Muslim woman, especially when she is in the presence of a man that she is not related to.

Another reason why women wear face veiling is to ensure that they are modesty dressed. It is important to note that modesty is not stressed for women alone in the Islamic culture, it is also stressed for men, and as such, both women and men are required to be modestly behaved, no only with respect to the way they are dressed but also in terms of their behaviours.

Overall, women can decide to wear a face veiling in order to express their views and beliefs on sexual modesty or to express their piety. Some wear it as a way of showing non-acceptance of the western belief on sexuality, or to express their membership in a political or religious movement. Women also wear it for enhanced privacy or mobility, especially in an environment or a social gathering that is mostly filled with men.
