All Puffed Up Like The Birds In Winter

When buying some winter outerwear, what should you buy; a jacket or a coat? It all depends how warm you want to be.  Jackets are generally shorter than coats and the latter will give you more insulation.

You should certainly consider buying a coat if you have a long body or are tall because a jacket will give you even less cover.  To that end you may want to have a look at a Women’s belted puffer coat as they will give you all the warmth and length you are going to need this winter.

If you have ever observed birds sitting on branches or wires, you can’t fail to have noticed that they puff themselves up when it is cold or it rains.  The reason for this is that warm air will circulate between their feathers which will keep their little bodies warm.

The same is true of puffer garments as they have square or diamond shaped patches which are filled with an insulating material. This is either down or a synthetic material which does pretty much the same as the bird feathers.

This material allows warm air to circulate freely which is produced by our bodies and, together with a rain proof outer layer, will keep us both dry and extremely comfortably warm.

Since we live in a climate where just on occasions the temperature drops below zero but it is often rainy, you could get away with a coat that is adequately padded and more reasonably priced.  You should, however, make sure that the outside of it is rain proof so that you do not get soaked to the skin when it rains.

To this end goose or duck down filled coats may be too hot for your purposes.  However, if you live in Scotland you will probably need this type. Synthetic materials will mimic the properties of down and will trap air like down does.  This is a less expensive option.

There is another advantage to this material too. They are easier to wash and dry.
