A few minutes with Aimee Mullins @ L’Oreal Paris Fashion Festival

Funny as hell and an imagination that would rival a six year olds, our interview with Aimee Mullins turned insightful as we made some new discoveries in life. Alphabetically, the letter ‘G’ is a loner while ‘R’ is Morgan Freeman – Aimee has characters for each letter of the alphabet!

In the middle of a busy day, just coming from New York and Los Angeles, Aimee sat down with us for a chat about her role as ambassador for L’Oreal Paris, things she is passionate about and how risk takers and being honest about it, are traits she most admires in people.

Aimee has no idea what she is going to wear to tonight’s launch party and more often than not, will decide last minute admitting that she is the kind of person who barely plans anything in life.

Aimee is a person authentic to herself, whether in a room with us or on stage in front of thousands. She radiates the room with energy and connection; it’s her passion that shines through and it’s contagious.

With a personality as vibrant as her talents, she also works to reach out to the community, to help others recognize their own potential and talents, despite what obstacles they may have to overcome. She is incredibly passionate about women’s rights in this day and age and speaks very seriously about working towards equality, regardless of race or agenda.

“It’s important, especially on International Women’s Day, to remember that it’s important” she said.

When asked to define beauty, she is quick off the mark.

“I think it’s a mixture of confidence and compassion. For me, strength has to have a component of vulnerability, or it’s not really strength. Strength is not an ability to know or understand frailty or weakness, its knowing that yes you have that and you move forward anyway” she responds.

Aimee goes on to say “When I think someone is beautiful, it’s almost certainly because there’s that quality there. You can see it. It’s a radiant thing because you have compassion not only for yourself but also others. It’s an openness of energy and spirit that is engaging”.

A very humble person, Aimee acts as L’Oréal Paris’ ambassador but when asked about her role model status and what values she would like to leave people with, she adds that she doesn’t like to be known as a role model.

Her choices are her own and she reserves the right to make mistakes and takes full responsibility for them. She believes you have to find your own way and to listen to your voice and what being an ambassador means is absolutely being yourself. Her thoughts about being a role model feels to her like she would be binding herself from the freedom to make mistakes.

A standout quote; “go ahead and be wildly improbable and realistic with the vision of the life you want to create”. We couldn’t agree more.

Aimee Mullins is one amazing person. Genuine. Beautiful. Humble.

We were thrilled to meet her.
