A buyer’s guide for shape wear for muffin top, love handles, and tummy pooch

Sometimes despite firm vows to stop, you just can't deny yourself one more McDonalds and before you know it, you are struggling with excess fat all over your body. The rolls of fat around your midsection may result in features such as muffin top, love handles and belly pooch.

Muffin top describes the body pudge that overhangs around the waistline especially when a person wears low waist pants. It mirrors the top or head of a muffin that overhangs around the paper wrapping and hence its name was derived from this phenomenon. Hormonal changes, physical inactivity and improper diet are the leading causes of the development of muffin top because it leads to fat storage around the waistline.

While one may not have to be visibly fat to develop muffin top, love handles is a tire of excess fat around a fat person’s waistline. While the feature is undesirable, the term is less offensive and actually attractive because it symbolizes the fact that one can grab his or her loved one at the love handles and bring them closer. Lastly, the tummy pooch is a protruding stomach also associated with weight gain.

Whichever is your situation, you can always get back in shape through exercise, proper diet and so on, but they are those emergency days out where you may have to do a quick fix. The best shapewear for muffin top, love handles or tummy pooch lets you squeeze the pudge thus realizing a curvier shape in the midsection. Here are the features to look out for to ensure that you get the best of these undergarments;

  1. i) Size- In a bid to appear as thin and hourglass shaped as possible, like many women, you may be tempted to wear an undersized body shaper so that it can squeeze you more. But this would be folly of you because you would end up with an unflattering silhouette, untold discomfort, as well as the risk of internal body organ damage. The size you choose should be your perfect fit- no more, no less.
  2. ii) Fabric quality- you wouldn’t want shapewear that cinches, slips off or makes you sweat uncontrollably. You should look for soft but sturdy and stretchy fabric that will stay in place all day. The material also needs to be breathable and sweat-wicking thus preventing skin infection.

iii) Comfort and convenience- you are likely to be wearing the body shaper for the whole day and thus you should avoid an uncomfortable design that can hurt you, strain your back, hinder comfortable walking and sitting, and so on. Most body shaping garments also cover the crotch and it would be convenient if it has a hook and eye closure that you can open and close when you want to pee.

  1. iv) Wearability under outfits- the muffin top or tummy pooch shaper is an undergarment meant to be worn under other clothes and thus it should be suitable for that. Depending on your choice of outfit for the day, the shapewear should be invisible underneath clothes both in terms of color and fabric. Going for color matching or dark colors is more preferable as well as smooth fabric without laces that can show under clothes.
  2. v) Your target excess fat feature- a belly pooch is different in shape and location from a muffin top and thus they need slightly different shapewear designs. A tummy pooch needs something optimized to flatten the stomach while the muffin top and love handles need a body shaper that will squeeze the hip and waist line.
