8 Hygienic Habits That Are Mistakenly Considered Healthy

Maintaining proper hygiene is a very important habit that can prevent different infections and diseases. However, there are a lot of habits that seem healthy but the reality is that they can affect your health. Moreover, some of them can even cause certain health issues. In this article, we gathered eight hygienic habits that are mistakenly considered healthy.

1. The use of cotton swabs to clean ears

Many people can’t live without ear cleaning with the help of cotton swabs after taking a shower. However, you should know that the use of cotton swabs can lead to countless disasters from punctured eardrums and ear infections to hearing loss. It is important to understand that the ear canal doesn’t even need to be cleaned at all. During a shower, enough water enters the ear canal to naturally remove accumulated wax.

2. Bubble baths

What can be more relaxing than resting in a bath full of fragrant foam? However, one day you may notice irritated skin and an unpleasant yeast infection after such a bath. Aromas and harsh detergents in bath bombs can wash out protective oils from your vagina and disturbs the skin's natural pH balance. Moreover, bubble baths raise your chances to develop dryness, vaginal infections, and bladder infections.

3. Douching

Almost every gynecologist in the world agrees that douching without a medical reason is not beneficial to your health. The reality is that douching disturbs the normal pH and flushes out beneficial bacterias. Moreover, you should know that douching products increase your exposure to harmful chemicals (phthalates) that can affect your hormones, increase your risk of chronic diseases, and cause reproductive problems as well.

4. Spraying perfume in underwear

Despite the fact that most people don’t spray perfumes directly on the genital area, some of them can deodorize their underwear. But the reality is that any chemical near the genitals can affect your natural pH and you can develop a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, or a urinary tract infection. 

5. Prolonged taking a shower

Taking a long, hot shower, especially in the morning is not beneficial to your skin. The reality is that a hot shower removes protective oils from your skin. That’s why it is better to take a shower as fast as possible. However, you can take a hot shower at night because the cooling process that occurs after the shower slows down the metabolic activity (digestion, heart rate, and breathing) that makes it easier to fall asleep.

6. Washing hair daily

Despite the fact that most of us prefer to wash our hair day by day, there is a significant reason to refuse this habit. The reality is that washing hair every day can remove the natural oils that are beneficial to your hair. Even if you have oily hair, avoid washing hair daily because it can make them dry and brittle.

7. Toothbrushing after each meal

We’ve been told since childhood that maintaining proper oral hygiene helps prevent tooth decay and different oral diseases. However, toothbrushing after each meal can actually damage our teeth. In order to avoid enamel erosion, it is better to wait at least 30 minutes after a meal to let saliva neutralize the acid from foods. Most acids can soften the enamel and you can scratch it if you brush your teeth right after acidic foods or drinks. 

8. Excessive moisturizing

If your skin is dry and itchy, you may want to apply the lotion every hour. However, this is not the best idea. You need to understand that applying an excessive amount of moisturizer especially at night can lead to a tolerance that causes the skin to produce less natural emollient and this makes it even drier. This means that your skin no longer produces the necessary nutrients, which only makes you moisturize more. That’s why it is better to apply only a thin layer of moisturizer or use an oil-free balm.
