do we follow fashion trends because:

a. superior authorities in the industry have decided that 'this is what looks good' and we trust their tatse, so we go along with it
b. feel the need to be 'in'
c. think we actually really like that style, 'it just happens to be trendy right now'
d. believe it is important to be 'up to date'
e. all of the above (if that's possible)

food for thought.

I think many times we follow trends to belong and be a part of something...in this case something visual.

Everyone enjoys new, fresh looks, especially if it's the hot and puts in with the "in" crowd - aging myself - so i would Elise and TrendLover. Visual appearance is the first and strongest impression

Elise-You're right. I think that the need to feel connected to others is definitely a contributor to trends development. Thanks!

jaja- being ín' and having looks are certainly important. what about the opposite? do you think individuals who stand out and have their own style ultimately become the trendsetters?

Honestly Trend... We don't follow trends. We set'em.. It all boils down to who can show the most people their style. That my friend makes the hit a hit.

Truly...most of us fashionistas are more likely to be defined as trendsetters, rather than trend-followers. However, the rest of society (the masses!) tend to follow fashion trends. I believe it is simply because of 2 reasons:

1. the need to feel updated, hip, 'in' etc.
2. Underestimation of one's own fashion sense-many people prefer to trust the more 'stylish' authorities. Following a trend is safer than being innovative...

On another note-if you're setting the trend, and it's a 'hit', wouldn't that mean that there is a population which is in fact following your trend?

TRENDS? They are the aesthetic culmination of cultural dialogue or in the case of many a polylog. Trends are aesthetic forms of communications that highlight our conscious or unconscious value systems, identities, sexualities, fears, hopes, passions. They are as fleeting as our own emotions, as fickle as love and hate. They are in the end human in every way and hopelessly honest about who we all really were. Trends that are identified have already died. Realness is alive, doing, creating, being, loving! These are the machinations of timelessness.

Everything else falls away like ashes.....
But just remember...
HIPPIE NEVER DIES!!!
