Fashions shows are incredible events, full of vibrant clothes, beautiful models and important people in the industry. If you manage to wow those present, your chances of making it in the industry will be a hundred times higher.

But without attention to detail and proper planning, fashion shows would not be as thrilling as we know them to be. A good designer will know to do a bit more than just dress the models and send them down the runway. This means thinking of hair and make-up, invitations, gift bags, and, of course, location.

The location is exactly what we are going to talk about in this article. If you want to really surprise those invited, don’t choose a traditional event hall to host your show. Try to think outside the box and pick a place that you wouldn’t usually go for, but would make your collection stand out and leva the guests wowed. If you can’t seem to think of any, maybe the following ideas will inspire you. Let your creativity show and make this event memorable for anyone attending.

An industrial hall

No matter how big or small the city you live in is, you most certainly can find an unused industrial hall somewhere on the outskirts of the city. This will go extremely well for a number of collections, including streetwear, urban, and even Avant-Garde.

If you will be presenting a more delicate collection, you can decorate the hall to contrast with the clothes and make them stand out. Basically, this location can be converted to become anything you want it to, so don’t hesitate to call any available place in your city.

Do keep in mind that you will need to take care of everything inside the location, including installing the runway, bringing in chairs for your guests to enjoy the show, as well as putting together the backstage.

P.S.: Don’t forget the afterparty!

A grocery store

You may think that a grocery store is not suited for a runway show, but hear me out. Grocery stores have plenty of aisles, which you can turn into your own personal runway, so you get to tremendously cut down on preparation time. The only thing you need to ensure is the seating area, where guests can enjoy the show.

You may have to pull some money out of your pocket to convince a grocery store owner to rent you the place for the day, but it can definitely be done. Don’t believe me? Check out the fashion show Stolen Girlfriends Club, a New Zealand label, did back in 2011. Quite a head-turner, right?

A guest house

Cottages and guest houses have become quite a popular location for all types of fashion events. From awards, to fashion magazine events, and even fashion shows, there is something about the intimate and cozy feeling of a guest house that seems to attract people.

Look for a guest house that has a spacious garden where you can host the runway show and consider also renting some of the rooms if you have guests coming from outside the city. It will make it that much easy for them to get ready and be present if you do so. A Victorian guest house can be the perfect place for bohemian and feminine collections and will look like they belong there.

An abandoned mansion

If you are planning for a more Avant-Garde show, an abandoned mansion is the perfect location to do so. Additionally, a dark or more gothic-inspired collection can also work well here. The place will complement the clothes and set the mood for the show. You can use projection mapping to project images on the outside of the building, to transform the location in whatever way imaginable.

If you live in a big city, finding a mansion that is not inhabited anymore shouldn’t be hard. But do take into consideration the fact that you may need to do some cleaning inside and outside of the house. An abandoned old mansion will look good, but if pieces of the wall are scattered all over the place, it may give it more than just an old feeling. The last thing you want is for accidents to happen.

A construction site

Cities are full of construction areas, and if you manage to talk to the right people, you may be able to put on a memorable show. Streetwear and urban collections will feel just at home on a construction site, with equipment and concrete blocks all over the place.

Please do make sure the location is safe to use before installing everything, to avoid unwanted accidents. Talk to the construction manager and ensure they are moving away anything that may be a threat to those present. Fashion comes first, but safety comes before it.

A water park

Was the water element an inspiration for your collection? Are you launching a swimwear line? Then why not find a water park to present it to the world? You can make use of all the décor elements and water toys you can find there, to make your collection stand out and impress those present.

A Plexiglas runway over the pool will certainly be a showstopper but do make sure that the models practice “walking on water” in advance. The last thing you want is an America’s Next Top Model moment, with models falling in the pool one after another.

On the streets

Ever heard of “the street is your runway”? Well, why not turn one of your favorite boulevards in the city in your own personal runway for the show? What better place for an urban streetwear collection, right? Look for a street with buildings that give out the same feeling as your collection does, and take advantage of the sidewalks, by turning them into a catwalk.

Important names in the industry did it a few times before, so what is stopping you? The only thing you need to do is have a talk with the authorities and see if they are able to help you out for a few hours one day.
