Irish Tartan

Tartan is a fabric made up of horizontal and vertical stripes in different colors, on a colored background. This is the fabric which is used to make the Kilts. The Kilts are used as a traditional symbol both in Scotland and Ireland. In both countries, the use of Kilt is very famous and, hence, considered the representation of pride in their cultures. But when it comes to the Tartan both the countries has a vast difference in the origin as well as the symbolic identification. The Scottish tartan represents the identity of a Scottish clan, and each Scottish family has their own tartan, distinguished by their surname. However, the Irish tartan represents the identity of districts and counties of Ireland. If one is from Cork, he would wear a kilt made with the Cork County Tartan. The national tartan of Ireland was introduced during the rise of Irish nationalism and considered as a symbol of Gaelic tradition. The Saffron Kilt is considered the traditional Kilt of Ireland. It has the color like mustard yellow, often with shamrock appliques down the pleat. The Saffron Kilt is the most widely worn kilt in Ireland today because of the patriotic impression as it was first worn by the Irish military personals in the British Army in the 20th century.
