4 Of the Worst Handmade Jewellery Wearing Mistakes

Handmade jewellery pieces are, unquestionably, beautiful. The problem is, however, that the beauty of the handmade jewellery online that you invested in and love so much can be tarnished if you ever make any one of these four mistakes below:

1. Wearing Too Much Jewellery
Handmade or designer, it doesn’t matter. If you have too much jewellery hanging off of your body, then not only is your entire “look” incredibly confusing, but you’ll come off looking tacky and cheap – both of which is a crime against handmade women’s jewellery.

The key here is to know what’s “stackable” and what’s not, what’s complimentary and what’s completely gaudy. A set of bracelets can be fantastic, but don’t go all out with a thick choker and rings on multiple fingers. Make one piece the focal point, and keep everything else as simple (yet stylish) as possible.

2. Wearing Pieces That Lack Of Focus
As mentioned briefly above, when choosing the pieces of handmade women’s jewellery you’ll be wearing, make sure that you are absolutely clear on which piece will be the “attention getter”. Wearing a large bib-style resin necklace with chandelier earrings and an armful of bangles and bracelets is incredibly confusing and is doing your look no favours. Choose what you’d like to stand out from the lot, and then choose complimentary pieces that will draw attention to that piece.

TIP: When complimenting pieces, don’t be too “matchy”. Look for things like colour, texture, and metals used to compliment that focal piece, but don’t choose to wear an item that closely mirrors the appearance of that focal piece.

3. Wearing “Musical” Jewellery
We all know the type, the daring individuals whose wooden bangles bangle so much that it sounds as if they should be part of a band. While it can be hard to determine whether a piece of fashion jewellery will be noisy prior to purchasing, just look at the weight, the purpose, and the type of material being used. Think about how it’ll move on your body, and then completely avoid any pieces that you think will crash or clang! to the point that you’ll annoy your family, friends, and co-workers.

4. Wearing Incompatible Materials
Keep in mind that a lot of those who craft handmade women’s jewellery are not professionals. They do this at home after their children go to bed, or they do it on their weekends. While they love what they do, they may not all be fully aware of what materials “work” and which don’t. The gemstones and metals should coordinate and work with one another, sometimes to the point where they create a brand new and completely striking look.

Somewhat on the same topic is making sure that the pieces that you select match with your wardrobe. For example, a necklace made of heavy wooden beads likely wouldn’t properly compliment or work well with a blouse made of thin silk. The length of any necklace you choose should also compliment the collar (i.e. a choker compliments a deeper neckline, but not a turtleneck sweater).
