There must have been innumerable times when we must have dozed off just where we ever we are. There must have been innumerable occasions when we must have lost our cool and snapped at the slightest of instant. This affects not only our personal but also professional relationships, at all levels.
Many studies have proven that our moods are directly linked to our sleep. As per the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, inadequate sleep leads to high stress levels and increased irritability. On the other hand, good sound sleep can enhance our well-being, keep us bright and energetic through the day and also increase our productivity.
Sleep has been stated to cause many problems, psychological and psychiatric, as per Dr. Lawrence Epstein, Medical Director of Sleep Health Centers. In fact, insufficient sleep tends to result in chronic mood disorders. A minimum of seven to nine hours of sleep is recommended by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), for adults aged between 18 to 64 years.
The best way to regulate our sleep is to keep in mind the following points:
A proper bedtime ritual will help you to prepare for bed and get good sleep. This ritual should start at least one hour before hitting the bed, which can include reading a book, having dim bedroom lights, and keeping the alarm away from the bed. This ritual will help relax the body and mind and over time will help with regular sleep pattern.
Exercising on a daily basis helps to reduce anxiety levels and symptoms of depression, according to the NSF. With regular exercise even for a few minutes on a daily basis, you tend to sleep faster, as your body is relaxed.
A comfortable mattress has a lot to do with our sleep quality. According to the NSF, a comfortable memory foam mattresscan relax the body and induce good sleep. However, the mattress has to be chosen based on our sleep pattern, health condition, body type, etc.
