I'm sure everyone has a different opinion about what it takes to be an independent designer-entrepreneur. We designer-entrepreneurs probably all think, "you have to be like me!"
I know I started out feeling extremely under-qualified. With no current connections in the industry and no fashion education, where was I to start?
At that time I failed to recognize the strengths I had inherited from my family. Both of my parents are entrepreneurs, who can never be happy in an… Continue

In April, Women’s Wear Daily interviewed David Birnbaum
on retail strategies in the current economy. Birnbaum concluded that in order to remain a viable brand, long term survival depended on a brand or retailer rethinking and redefining the relationship that it had with its customer.
To accomplish this, understand… Continue

So last year about this time I was dating someone in the Navy (who kind of turned out to be a loser), when he left for bootcamp I was somehow compelled to get a anchor tattoo on my foot. Lots of people criticized that decision of mine but I have to say I love it. I have now created at least three stories to explain why I got it and alternate telling people them. (One is about how I just love J. Crew so much) Regardless I feel that the nautical theme is one that we will see appear in every… Continue

It's a little puzzling, given the immense popularity of knit fabrics in fashion today, why knit prints are relatively hard to find. Premier fabric designers like Robert Kauffman
(pictured), Amy Butler, and Michael Miller all seem to design prints produced exclusively as woven fabrics.
Is this because their target market is primarily quilters? Today, with the emergence of so much patchwork in… Continue

Yesterday morning around 9:00AM, I saw a handful of people waiting outside a Foot Locker on West 34th Street. They were sitting on lawn chairs, so I assumed they were waiting for some sort of special promotion. Amazing that people will sit around for several hours to get a free give away or purchase a new shoe style. Today I walked by and I see that they are still waiting... Wow, they are not waiting around for a few hours. They are waiting for… Continue

As I rush out of Port Authority (NYC), in the mornings and rush back in during early evening, I have been noticing the development of a clothing store. It appears to be called Save Fashion. I have not had the time to check out the sign carefully because I am always in a rush. Today when I glanced, I think the sign may have said that this is a temporary store that will be around for around a month. I thought that was rather interesting. Wondering if this is a traveling sample sale. At this… Continue

The number one annoyance I face when helping customer is answering there sizing questions. Do your pants run big? If I am a 6 at Express what size am I here? While I can only try my best to answer these questions in all honesty there is no standard right answer to the question of what size a client is. During this past holiday season I was confronted with this similar question and answered to my best ability that in general I thought the pants in question ran true to size as far as our store's… Continue

Not sure why it was never created before, but finally a website I've always wanted is now there. I found this site last night... it has to be new. It's absolutely perfect. I was able to upload all of my pictures and post them in my own closet. Also, it allows you sort, keep track of dates worn (don't need to keep track anymore myself) and allows you to even mix & match with your friends with their clothes. Amazing what technology can do these days.

After all these years (over a decade), Apparel Search has finally created a section specifically for three key fashion categories.
Although the Apparel Search clearly touches on nearly every aspect of fashion, the site did not specifically have a unique starting point for people searching for women's apparel, men's apparel, or children's apparel. Well, Apparel Search has recently rectified this issue. If you are interested, you can check… Continue

As the Director of Interactive Marketing for 1928 Jewelry
, I was constantly testing new strategies and tactics that will help build online brand awareness, increase our customer base and of course, drive sales.
Since I started working at 1928, I was been amazed by the women that wear our jewelry and the stories of how they came to wear our jewelry. The all possess this innate ability to take a piece and make it theirs. I find myself… Continue
