- About Me ...
- We are two jewelers from Lithuania, Vilnius - Ausra Bankauskaite and Mante Maskoliunaite – who recently moved to NYC. We've been working together since 2008 under "aka jewellery" name.
We met while studying Jewelry design in Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts in Lithuania and found a something in common – passion for contemporary art, passion to construct, and passion to create.
During the studies we both had practice working for other jewelry designers in Vilnius and New York. We learned many new things – how to work fast, save time, do everything perfect and the most important thing – that nothing makes you more happy, than creating and working on your own. In 2008, after gaining bachelors degree of Jewelry design in Vilnius Academy of Fine Arts, we decided to start working together as freelance designers, under “aka jewellery ” name.
“Aka jewellery “ means also known as jewellery. We choose this name because contemporary jewellery is often left behind the contemporary art and sometimes doesn’t belong among jewelry as well. Our goal is to bring more people to appreciate contemporary jewellery. Make it affordable and create a way of wearing a little piece art every day and show that jewelry can be not only an accessory, but can exist as a form of conceptual and contemporary art.
In our work we try to combine many different materials from diodes to medical pills. We are inspired by everyday life, habits and everything that is surrounding us. This is where we find our creative sparkle - an idea. Our passion is to develop the idea. And the result is our jewelry, witch always has something hidden underneath.
