The Fashion Industries Favorite Business Network ...

Hi my names Tash,

I wanted peoples feed back on a certain topic - that is; what do you look for in a potential PR agent? I am currently working in a small business - for mens tailored suits and shirts in Sydney - and I am doing the PR/Marketing and design - I have a major role and I wanted to know how long or how much experience I should gain before I move up in the world.

My goal is to find a job overseas - in the USA or UK - but I do not know how to go about it because nobody ever replies to me.

So I was wondering what peoples thoughts were or advice on what I should do???

Hi Tash,
You are mentioning "and design", if you are involved in the product or company design aspect you are now into Branding and Identity. This will take your study of the categories of markets, trends, etc. PR has alot to do with advertising, visability, celebrity endorsements, usage, placement, these are all items you will need to study as well. A background in design wouldn't hurt, this will help you understand what works and what doesn't, minimizes mistakes, you will retain more creative control. I thought you were a writer? What is the suit market for menswear in Australia, being so close or a part of South Asia garment market? What percentage of the menswear market is suits?

Stevn
hi Steven

I am a writer as well :-) But my full-time job is in PR/Marketing and design - yes most garments are made in Asia. Our company sources fabrics from Europe - Italy and some Asian mills - and is made in Thailand.

I completed my course in fashion college and was open minded about what areas I wanted to get into - I always wanted to work in magazines but as time progressed; I liked the freelance writing experience and thought my full-time job would be in PR/Marketing or buying - but I landed this job through a designer I had previously met last year in Sydney - so it was a great opportunity as I am doing more than one job - its a great way to see what I really love doing.

I do not know the percentage of the menswear market - good food for thought - I'll look into it. But overall the corporate fashion wear is minimal and is a great avenue for potential business.
