Project runway premiered its first season on December 1, 2004.

Project Runway is an American reality television series on Lifetime Television, previously on the Bravo network, which focuses on fashion design and is hosted by model Heidi Klum. The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are usually restricted in time, materials, and theme. Their designs are judged and one or more designers are eliminated each week.

Project Runway uses progressive elimination to reduce the initial field of 12 or more fashion designers down to 3 before the final challenge. Each non-finale challenge (typically the scope of one episode) requires the designers to develop one or several pieces of new clothing to be presented at a runway show.

The designers are given a budgeted stipend to select and purchase fabric and notions, and then provided a limited amount of time to finish their designs. Often, the designers work independently, although on some challenges, contestants must work in teams or as a single collective group.

Generally, the loser of each challenge is eliminated from the competition. After the final challenge, the remaining three designers are then told to prepare a complete fashion collection.

Read project runway blog posts from around the world. Visit the Project Runway website at Lifetime or the older project runway site at Bravo (season 5 and earlier). Note: Season 5 Project Runway was the last season at Bravo. For season 6, the show moved to Lifetime.

The following is from TooFab (not from me) I thought you might want to read it.  Image source: Getty

The season finale of "Project Runway" airs tonight. Three of the four finalists will have their dreams crushed and get the dreaded kiss-off from Heidi Klum (better her than Michael Kors!).

Click on the "Launch Gallery" button to see all four finalist's collections and see who we predict will be the last designer standing. Then tell toofab if you agree with our picks!

All season long, Viktor has been flying under the radar. His productivity has unmatched -- often producing multiple pieces when others designers struggled to complete just one look.

His final collection may lack the colors of his competitors, but is still bold. His mirror image prints (inspired from Mexico) create a gorgeous Rosarch effect. His attention to detail -- exemplified in his zipper leather skirt and pearl jacket -- is unmatched.

Prediction: Winner

Anya Ayoung-Chee

It's no surprise that the Trinidad and Tobago native Anya went with a print-heavy resort wear line. Her clothes are flowing and feminine -- she definitely knows how to flatter a women's body. The tailoring issues that have plagued her all season don't appear evident from the runway photos. Our only criticism -- her collection seems very one-note. The judges have shown they favor finalists who can present a range (just ask Laura Bennett).

Prediction: Runner-up

Joshua McKinley

For awhile, it seemed that producers kept Joshua around because he was good TV. He tore into his enemies and talked behind the backs of his friends. He may have a temper, but he's also very talented. His collection is definitely very showy. We love the modern silhouettes and material choices. That being said, taste is still an issue (he went with this horrible print despite Tim Gunn's warnings) and these shorts are just unwearable.

Prediction: Second runner-up

Kimberly Goldson

We love the urban chic point-of-view Kimberly had all season. Her collection, however, was a bit of a hodgepodge. On top of that, the palette didn't excite us and this fabric in particular looked really cheap. That being said, no one can sew a pair of pants like Kimberly. All of her pairs, from these high-waisted pants to capris, fit like a dream.

Prediction: Eliminated before Fashion Week

Anya is has been my fav this season, love her designs she is doing great even with her lack of sewing experience. I would love to buy & wear her clothing. Also like Viktor & Kimberly but I hope she steps it up, she has alot of talent needs to have more confidence in her abilities. She should take a hint from Viktor, he very confident, heh. Love this show!!!

Through Sunday May 29, Lifetime Television is auctioning four wedding dresses designed by Project Runway contestants to benefit Break the Cycle , the leading national organization working with youth to prevent domestic and dating violence.

Celebrating the royal wedding and healthy relationships, Lifetime Television asked Project Runway contestants to sketch their version of the royal gown. Designers from each season participated, submitting their drawings in the excitement leading up to Prince William and Kate Middleton's nuptials. Designers Emilio Sosa (Season 7), Johnathan Kayne (Season 3), Irina Shabayeva (Season 6) and Nick Verreos (Season 2) then turned their sketches into real garments.

Now, Lifetime is generously auctioning off these fantasy creations and donating all the proceeds to Break the Cycle. The public can view and bid on the beautiful dresses online at
