The Fashion Industries Favorite Business Network ...

I have been working in NYC for the past 18 yrs, on and off....  I am just wondering is there a place for creativity in this area?  Having worked for several large and small labels - companies, it seams that they are all interested in money and volume, and not the integrity of the design and product.
What is your take on this?

In my opinion, there certainly is a place for creativity in New York. I believe that you are correct that many (most) of the companies are interested in "money". However, I think that most well run business in NYC allow for creativity. Some companies will allow creativity at a higher extent then other companies. I guess the companies you worked at tied your hands in this regard.

I guess the creativity aspect will vary depending on ones particular position within the company (and which company you work for). For designer (working for others), I believe management should give you freedom to be creative (freedom within reason).

In my opinion their should be fair limitations that dictate that design work should be inline with the direction of the brand as well as being sound in regard to economical manufacturing. Although it may be "creative", it would be unreasonable for a designer to go over board and develop a garment that is too expensive to produce. Or too creative to be wearable...

Anyway, I think creativity is in New York. You just have to find the right company (or take a run at it with your own business...)

Note: the quest for money in the fashion industry does not always come from "volume". With the proper niche, and high "margin", money can be made on small volume.
I agree that there is creativity in NYC of course, and as you said in the last paragraph that with the proper niche, and high margin money can be made on small volume.
This is the same issue i've been facing as well in New York. everyone is doing what the other hot brand for the moment is doing and it's just a big xerox company around the board. All these investors are not concerned with building brands anymore. instead of having a brand that last for 20 years plus they rather just burn out the line and happy to get 2 years plus. I'm so jaded with it that i'm staying clear of money grubbing investors trying to tell you how to satisfy your customer with no knowledge of the fashion world and consumer.
I think with a sergence of more regional fashion weeks. that is an area of creativity.

I think the opposite, but know I only have 8 years experience, I think more designers need to understand and have business savvy. I think it is about numbers and when I learned that was able to be more productive and wise in my business decisions that helped propell my creativity a bit more

d
also can you talk more about what you are referring to - brands?

I do find the phenomenon that brands can get a celebrity to help sell a product as well. not much in the area of creativity i suppose more about numbers.
