Hi Joanna! Congratulations on a beautiful web site. You definitely have an eye for elegance.

You have the question of the ages for fashion designers, I think. Unfortunately, the majority of the wholesale fashion public still rely on the traditional way of marketing your fashions to them. They still do the whole linesheet-showroom-Magic way of doing things.

I have a different marketing strategy. I honestly believe that if you can get your linesheet in front of a buyer, just one or two, but if you do that armed with a tremendous online presence and popularity, that could very well convince that wholesale buyer to take a chance on your designs. You would have already proven that your bags are sellers because you have the revenue and email marketing list to back it up. And best of all, you have an ace up your sleeve because they can take advantage of your underground buzz and look hip and cool doing so.

Now, there are those who say that a strong online presence is detrimental, that the buyer will see your online store as competition. This is true if you offer up big sellers from your site. Instead, why not give the buyer exclusive colors, styles, etc. that cannot be found on your site? I happen to place a lot of stock in the idea that online shoppers are really looking for the fringe...they shop online looking for something different. So maybe that's the place for your lime green crinkle patent, but the black pebble leather is for Nordstrom (just a hypothetical example). Also, look into the private label opportunities that exist with the major retailers.

But how do you develop a strong online presence? Aha! That's where email and internet marketing for your fashions comes into play.

I love to brainstorm, and folks here think I'm helpful, so please contact me if you want to pick my brain.

Best,

Andrea

Hello everyone,
I am lunching my own line of leather accessories www.joannamaxham.com. I would welcome any creative and cost efficient ideas how to best market a brand-new line to the distributors, sales agents, and retailers. What works? What does not work?
