Maggie Norris Comment by Maggie Norris on July 22, 2010 at 2:47pm
Maggie Norris Couture Internship
Located in the heart of the fashion district, we are a luxury couture
design company looking for interns to start immediately. Interns have
the opportunity to get hands on design experience, learn the ins and
outs of the fashion industry, and build many contacts.

Maggie Norris Couture has an exciting year ahead with many high
profile events, projects, and opportunities for aspiring interns. We
need committed and ambitious interns that want to get real life
experience working for a couture house.

Interns may start as soon as possible and hours are flexible. Must
commit to schedule!

Interns must be extremely professional, personable, dependable, and
determined, because you will be working with high profile clientèle.

Interns are needed for the following departments:

* Public Relations
* Fashion Design
* Sales/ Finance
* Marketing

This internship is an excellent hands-on opportunity for the proper
marketing student. The marketing intern will assist in two key areas.
The first is the creation of a marketing and distribution plan for a
new shirting collection. The plan should encompass both a retail and
wholesale strategy, with identified targets and goals for sales.
Development of the plan includes researching high-end retails stores
(both department and specialty) in key locations throughout the United
States and defining the target market, as well as recommending
promotional ideas and ways to reach/target vendors.

The second area involves assisting with the overall business plan
development (covering all product lines) and assisting with developing
an overall sales and marketing plan.

Compensation will be commission based only.

* Finance/Accounting
The accounting intern will assist Maggie and other team members with
book- and record-keeping, improving accounting and financial controls
and financial statement projections for the financial section of her
business plan. Input and feedback on how to change and improve
existing systems is welcome and encouraged. The bookkeeping element is
hands-on, and requires a full understanding of retail transactions
(sales and purchase orders, etc.) and the related financial statement
recording. The intern will be responsible for tracking cash inflow and
outflow and notifying Maggie of related changes, as well as have
responsibility for deposits, bill paying, and contract labor payment
processing. Additionally, the intern will assist with negotiating
prices and payment terms with vendors. Preferred Skills: •Must have an
accounting background/concentration •Must have prior work experience
with small business bookkeeping and accounting and related software
(preferably Quickbooks) •Experience/understanding of small business
tax concerns a plus •Experience with/understanding of fashion cycles
and luxury goods preferred •Must be an independent worker and have a
professional demeanor •Ability to handle sensitive business
information in a confidential manner •Strong negotiation and
organizational skills a must

* Business Strategy/Management
This is an exciting, hands-on opportunity for the proper candidate.
The strategy intern will be working with Maggie and other team members
to develop the business plan and help support the further growth of
the business. Main duties include but are not limited to:

a. Spearheading the creation of the plan, including establishing the
framework, identifying tasks to be completed, delegating those tasks
to others as needed, collecting the results/sections and combining
into a single plan/presentation

b. Presenting ideas to Maggie Norris as well as potential investors

c. Collaborating with others on ideas for strategic growth

d. Implementing the agreed-upon strategy

This position is an excellent hands-on opportunity for the candidate
seeking a further, detailed understanding of the underpinnings of the
luxury goods industry and a small business/entrepreneurial
environment, as well as an opportunity to experience/work on all
functional areas. Compensation will be commission based at this point.

The position will initiate as an internship/freelance consulting
arrangement, with potential for a future executive position/full time
capacity in late 2009.

Functional areas of responsibility will include but are not limited to:
• Strategy and Operations
• Marketing and Business Development
• Finance and Administration

The business manager will interact with Maggie on a regular basis,
strategizing on the direction of the business and opportunities to
pursue, addressing challenges, negotiating many types of situations
(vendors, freelancers, consultants, etc.), soliciting proposals and
interviewing candidates and/or outside service providers, and most
importantly, executing any plans or projects made. The purpose of the
role is to ensure that the operational/business side of the
organization runs efficiently and effectively, and supports the
underlying creative design process and related logistics of product
development, manufacturing and distribution. The role is
comprehensive, encompassing all areas of general management. It is not
‘formal’, and requires flexibility, attention to detail and ability to
execute a variety of tasks. The proper candidate must have exceptional
communication and negotiating skills (written and verbal), a
professional demeanor and ability to handle oneself in a multitude of
settings and with high profile, celebrity clients.

Please note that is a non-compensated internship but, will grant
school credit if needed.

Chaya Keswani (Chhaya Couture) Comment by Chaya Keswani (Chhaya Couture) on April 11, 2010 at 4:51am
For SS2010 the team at Chhaya Couture took their thinking tank out to play and kicked the fashion rulebook out of the park. Three months of serious fashion and fun have resulted in “Folds & Frolic” – the youngest and most inspired collection from the label yet.

Like the likes of Andre Lima and Issey Miyake, for the current collection Chhaya drew inspiration from post-modern origami. Much of “Folds & Frolic” follows the technicalities of the art - numerous folds big and small, craft by hand only and minute precision. Embellishments and embroidery are kept minimal with focus shifted to the mixing and matching of colors and the structuring of fabrics.

Says head designer Chaya Keswani “This collection was like a series of fashion trials. Lots of pins and needles, fabric everywhere and random nipping and tucking to find outfits that flatter and ones that are fun. Fashion should never be boxed or boring, neither should be the process in which you create it.”

Fabrics were also chosen as in the art of origami, with a preference for interesting texture mixes as seen in a recurring rich black, pebbled cloth and an abstract bright blue print. For the latter, Chhaya experimented with subtle stonework that followed the print in both coloring and pattern creating a bolder, entirely original texture. Stronger taffetas were similarly chosen in brighter pinks, lemon yellows and midnight blues over the usual silks and satins. Extensive tulle layers ensured the shape and structure of silhouettes.

Coming to the Chhaya Couture techniques, the tricks of the trade for “Folds & Frolic” were structure, drapes and folds as always, but for SS2010 with extra emphasis on the third. Of special mention is an intricate pink and black one-piece with an expansive series of folds and drapes fastened firmly above the hemline. Lace-like embroidery crosses through the bodice as the waistline falls from high waist to hip. Shape on shape, fold on fold – constructing art through a fashion mould.

Another ensemble plays with the softer fluidity of folds. Grecian drapes gradually lead in circular motions to tighter, more frequent folds. Using two-tone chiffon in shades of pink Chhaya creates an overall formation that is both structured and romantic. Included in “Folds & Frolic” are skirts, boleros and even a jumpsuit – making a stepping away from the usual silhouettes.

The SS10 collection showcases Chhaya Couture’s mastery of a budding niche – young couture. Intricate yet fun, bold yet versatile, the label continues to smoothly navigate the fine line between craftsmanship and play – just like origami.
