I'm a fellow designer, and I'm showing my Spring 2011 collection on the 24th of this month. You always work a season ahead. If you are a buyer, buyers are already looking at Spring 2011 and placing orders, so I'd stop the Fall, and get Spring done ASAP!
Fall is done. Spring 2011 is just passing the skin of the teeth. By October you usually need your Spring line done so buyers can buy from you. November is really cutting it close, but it's doable. But it's not a good idea to sell for the current season, since it's always wear later in the stores, and right now you would be at wear now.
If you've already got the line developed, and production is finished, you can offer it as an "Immediate". The other option is to call it "Resort", then whatever doesn't sell, push it into Feb/Mar as "Immediate". Also, when you're offering immediates, buyers will be more comfortable if you can also show them the Spring/Summer 2011 collection at the same time. It gives them a sense that they will be able to rely on your collections in the future, instead of just picking a few pieces right now, then missing out if you don't produce next year.
These comments were all very helpful! I'm about to design a line for my website Gina Marie Vintage Boutique so I'm glad I stumbled across your advice!
I'm currently selling vintage and jewelry I'm making but I want to design/create clothing as well. Would it be a bad idea to just 'test the waters' by creating a couple pieces 5-10 for winter and just selling them on my site?
hiiiii....
well i would suggest you to arrange it soon and enter in boutiqe asap, as u hav ample amount of time for spring:) hope it wll work for u...gud luck
To preserve your label and your sanity I would start fall winter 2011. In this economy and short time you don't want to half @$$ it and destroy in one fail swoop what your trying to build. Take your time, build your pieces, and be ready for Fall/winter 2011.
I am glad I came across this. I also had a similar question and a lot more. I was working to have my swim line ready within the next two months by Nov-Dec (was supposed to be Sept-Oct) to show. Am I in good timing? Also are there do's and don'ts when contacting buyers? I used working in buying but never dealt with a new unknown designer. I did not want to blind email to keep my line confidential until an actual contact is made. What should I expect to be ask? What should I have such as marketing collateral, resources (how I manfctr) etc, financial projection, line sheet and whatever else are a must when I call? How many samples should I take?
I am in the process of completing logo trademarks and copyrights. Should this be done before I approach larger stores but I can pursue high-end boutiques or neither until that part is complete? or Can I sell online where there is less exposer until it's complete or do nothing at all until trademarks etc. are complete? I would assume the aswer would be sell, and make a profit while keeping that on the front burner of to do.
Swim is purchased in July-August for the following Spring receipts. I would set up an on-line presents and look at going to Miami Fashion Week or MAGIC next year.
