Safety is obviously and important issue when designing and manufacturing children's fashion. In this discussion section, we can discuss safety regulations etc. For example, children's sleepwear rules, drawstring rules etc.

At the Apparel Search website, you can find a clothing safety section. If you know any good information that should be added to that section, let me know.

Note: Information in this section is opinion. Please consult directly with the Consumer Products Safety Commission for official rules and regulations (www.CPSC.gov)

Today I received a press release titled "Fourteen Firms Agree to Pay More than $1 Million in Civil Penalties for Failing to Report Drawstrings in Children's Outerwear". The penalties settle allegations that the firms knowingly failed to report to the CPSC immediately, as required by federal law, that children's hooded sweatshirts or jackets they sold had drawstrings at the hood and/or neck. Children's upper outerwear with drawstrings, including sweatshirts or jackets, pose a strangulation hazard that can cause death to children.

If you are looking for rules and regulations, try www.cpsc.gov

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1973 and charged with protecting the American public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, call the CPSC hotline at 1-800-638-2772, or visit http//:www.cpsc.gov/talk.html. Further recall information is available at http://www.cpsc.gov.

It's really important to have the bases covered here, as a children's designer. When launching my line, I did look carefully at www.cpsc.gov, and called to clarify a point that was unclear from the site. The runaround I encountered during the phone call was very uninspiring, to say the least, and I never did get the question answered.

So I had to err on the conservative side, both for the sake of my business and for the sake of the children wearing my products. It really helps to have my own toddlers, who wear clothes form my line every day. As a safety-conscious parent I have an instinct for things that could be unsafe, and I steer clear, whether they are mentioned in the government regulations or not.
