Fashion Industry Network

The Fashion Industries Favorite Business Network ...

Have you seen or at least heard about the Sidewalk Catwalk display in NYC?  If you have no clue what I am talking about, you can see some of the photos and information that I posted on my blog about the Sidewalk Catwalk NYC for 2010.

You can see some of the Sidewalk Catwalk Photos I took in the photos section here on the Fashion Industry Network.

In this discussion forum, lets talk about the fashion designs on display, the designers that have contributed, the companies behind the event, etc.  Let's discuss various aspects.  If you have questions or answers regarding the Sidewalk Catwalk, please voice your thoughts.  I have a few questions... For example, who pays for those security guards that I see standing their each day watching the mannequins...  Who selected the designers?  Did the designers have to pay to participate? (after all, it is pretty good advertising...)

What are your thoughts regarding the Sidewalk Catwalk in New York?

Here is a bit more background on the event. This summary is from a pamphlet that is available near the mannequin catwalk. The event is presented by LF USA and is a one of a kind public art exhibit, created by the Fashion Center BID and featuring the work of New York City's top fashion designers (note, the pamphlet says "top fashion designers", however, the Fashion Industry Network did not judge... I bet their are some better designers in our NY Fashion Group). The exhibition is free to the public all summer long in the heart of New York City's Fashion District.

The event is from June 24, 2010 to September 3rd, 2010. The sidewalk catwalk is offering the artistic interpretations of a fashion industry icon - the mannequin - by 30 of New York's leading designers and two student design teams (that is cool that they let the students join in the fun). The exhibit showcaes custom-built mannequins, displayed runway-style down Broadway from Times Square to Herald Square. Each mannequin modeling a bold, one of a kind manifestation of its designer's artistic vision.

You can learn more at the Sidewalk Catwalk website.
Here is an example of one of the mannequins along with two young ladies posing along side.

I think that these mannequins are a fashion bloggers dream come true. Great photo opportunities...
WOW, what amazing luck I have. I think that I snapped this photo of the actual designers of this mannequin. These two lovely ladies may be Emily Saunders and Niyati Karwat from Parsons The New School For Design. What amazing random luck... I took this picture as I was running to catch the bus on June 24, 2010. I am so excited that I actually captured a picture of the mannequin with the actual designers. How cool is that?? I wish I had told them that they should join the Fashion Industry Network... If anyone knows them, ask them to stop by and tell us about their experience during the creation of the mannequin and garment.
Hiya - i was wandering around cyberspace and I found your mention of our mannequin - this is indeed a picture of me (right) and the lovely Niyai Karwat (left). Thanks for the shout out! It's been a very exciting time for both of us!
I just posted a bunch of pictures and a little about our process on my blog:

All the best,

It is really amazing how the internet works.. I take a random picture in one of the largest cities in the world. I post it online and then a few days later, the person that I took the picture of finds my website. Makes the world seam small... Anyway, very glad that you found the Fashion Industry Network. If you are interested, please share your thoughts with us regarding your experience with this project. You can either write something here in this section, or you can use the blog feature in your profile. For example, how were you selected to design one of the mannequins?
How well do you think these fashionable creations will hold up in New York City??? Will the weather and the tourists take their toll on the designs.. I have not personally seen anyone touching the mannequinns, but my guess is that some people can not resist. Here is the only sign of damage I have seen thus far. I took this photo yesterday. Scratch on the designers mannequin and missing hat.

Here is what the mannequin looked like on June 24th. Actually, maybe that scratch was always on the mannequinns left shoulder. Possibly, the strap was covering it...

Do you think that more signs of damage or theft will appear before the event ends in September?
Will the designers be making continuous repairs and adjustments?
Here is a design that is high maintenance. This particular design appears to have real flowers. If you look at this photo, you will see the tupes are filled with water. I wonder how often they plan to change the flowers. Possibly, fake flowers will replace the real ones in time. Long time between now and September third when this party is over...

Note: I took this photo this morning around before the heat of the day. I wonder what the flowers looked like at the end of the day.
Actually, I am not sure if the flowers are real or fake. Possibly they are fake flowers, but still set in water. Maybe I should sniff them tomorrow...
Today I noticed another side of fashion.. The back side.. Possibly, they should have given lady liberty some patriotic shorts or flag underwear.

You can see a better shot of this patriotic mannequin in the photos section.
There are 32 fashion designer mannequins on display as part of the Sidewalk Catwalk. Here are the names behind the designs. In fairness, I am not sure if these people actually did all the work to design the mannequins or if they pawned it off to their staff. I assume the designers had at least been involved in the final approval process. Possibly, not all of these designers had actually been out on the street bolting down their own creations... Really not sure.. Anyway, here is a list of the designers making the headlines...

yes ive heard about it, haven't had a chance to see them yet.
hopefully in the next week or so.
most new yorkers in the garment district who enjoy that bit of sunshine in the park outside macy's wouldn't destroy the mannequins.
and i would hope that no tourist wants a 'souvenir'.

In a statement, Fern Mallis (a chairperson for the project, in addition to being the senior vice president of IMG Fashion) said that the "groundbreaking, outdoor, public runway is destined to become New York City's major tourist attraction this summer." Considering the location and the spectacle, we just might agree.

There was no way to really showcase the idea that this is the home of American fashion, this is what we do here," says Barbara Randall, president of the Fashion Center BID.
"We wanted something that would bring people to the neighborhood and articulate who and what we are. So we came up with a mannequin parade," said Randal

"Sidewalk Catwalk," presented by the company LF USA,
Today August 31st (in the morning), I noticed all of the mannequins gathered into one location. I assume this was done in preparation for them to be removed from the street. According to the flier that I previously picked up near the mannequins, the event was supposed to end on September 3rd. I wonder if their has been a change in plans. Anyway, I did not check this evening to see if they were fully removed. However, as of this morning they were definately not in their original locations.

This is a picture I took with my iphone today August 31, 2010 of the Sidewalk Catwalk (new mannequin location for that moment).
