As I know, fashion industry proceed like this, for example,we want to proceed the fashion deal of 2010, what we need to do is to make preparation in 2009 even 2008, we need pay much attention to different trends such as color, fabric, technology etc for special products, choose the most suitable one for your goods and market to adopt for the products design, after you decide what kind of trends and products concept you want to applicate for your products, you need to make samples to do investigation among your customers to see which items will be the top one, which will be the regular collections for sales, then search for several fabric suppliers or factory to choose the best one and purchase from them.---of course you need to make market plan for your products when you decide the trends and concept.---Generally it is really complicated to speak clearly here, I hope you can check the different parts of planning, marketing, production and design in google or yahoo to master the common knowledge firstly, then combine the experience with your dealing industry to get it.in my site, there are many fashion trends for lingerie, maybe you can take it as reference.
I'm a fashion merchandising major and I suggest you to do some readings if you want to know more on the whole operation of fashion. If in the future you're more likely to open up your own company or line rather than needing the diploma to applie for a position at some company; then I suggest you to acquire the knowledge thourgh the books, which is way cheaper and just as informative as taking a course.

If you can settle down to read the books and use your critical thinking skill to take it further, you're as good as any merchandising student.

Let me know how you think about this and I can recommend to you some of the textbooks I've used.
Hey Vivian I know im kind of late with this message but what are some books that you used? please let me know. Thank You.

Hi Marvin,

There are many sides to the fashion industry and I'm going to give you book name for each area:

1. Understanding the fashion industry - Fashion: from concept to consumer (Author:Stephens Frings, Gini)

2. Consumer psychology - The Why of the Buy (Patricia Mink Rath) and Buyology (Martin Lindstrom)

3. Intro to manufacturing - Apparel Manufacturing: sewn product analysis (Ruth Glock)

4. Visual Merchandising - Silent Selling: best practices in visual merchandising (Judith Bell)

5. Basic management - Management (Stephen.P.Robbins)

6. Fabric technology - Textiles (Sara.J.Kadolphe)

7. Buying fundamental - Retail Buying:from basic to fashion (Richard Clodfelter) and Math for merchandising (Moore)

8. Fashion marketing - Principles of Marketing (Philip Kolter)

9. Product Development -Beyond Design (Sandra.J.Keiser)

10. design principles - Design Basics (David.A.Lauer). A MUST for all major.

11. Fashion design - Fundamentals of Fashion Design (Jenny Udale) and the design series book:

ISBN: 2940373418

ISBN2940373957

These books should make up the business side of fashion, slightly touching fashion design. As some are required classes for both the fashion merchandising major and fashion design major. It's important that you go in this order as some books are the building stone for others.

Best wishes,

Vivian
