All fabrics are tested for colour fastness, fabric strength, flammability and other parameters set by our customers to ensure product satisfaction. Hi, your company sounds like what I need! But I have not had my own fashion design business and invested heavily in attaining my degree with a major in fashion design. I want to focus on the creative side of things and also am not sure how much money I would need to start my business...I am quite business minded and have worked in marketing and advertising and so I would want to get involved with most parts of my business...but for someone who needs to start somewhere...what can you advise?

Finance, manufacturing, sales, these are 3 main difficulties that most start up designers face.

1. When you give a sample to a manufacturer and ask him to replicate, he may charge huge considering the fact of small volume, sourcing of fabrics and trims and many other issues. How about going to a small manufacturers factory, move along with him and source the raw materials by your own, make sewing patterns in his factory by yourself and just give him a sewing contract.You may be able to cut down 60% of the cost.
2. Finance - May not be a bother if you are ready to tie up with small manufacturers. They will finance your whole supply chain cost if you are willing to partner with them and give them regular sewing contracts.
3. Sales - Always do this with the help of independent sales rep based on commissions. For that you need to work backward by developing samples and hand over to him.

In effect if you have talent and are willing to travel a bit in the beginning, fashion industry is a goldmine for you.

I think you need someone to either invest in your business (a la Dragons' Den). So they give you an agreed sum of money for a percent of your company and they advise you on the businessey stuff.

Or you need a partner. Someone to work with, maybe agree a percentage of future sales as their fee. I guess they'd have to be fashion minded with a good head for business and some experience in sourcing, marketing etc.

Maybe post an ad on Gumtree, Craigslist etc.
You might even be able to find someone with money to put in.

But make sure you write up a proper contract!

Hello Joneien,
I have seen people as creative as you and people with the business side of it walk to my father's factory. They had a dream and some sketches. For some, it has gone pretty well. My father and I have seen them grow and are happy to be part of it. It's all having the passion and not giving up. I would suggest you get a production manager that takes care of the production part of it: taking the fabric to the cutter, sewing contractor, finishing, packaging, and shipping. Of course, that is after you have the patterns and samples made by a professional pattern maker and sample maker. Your samples should be the best quality posssible. You also need an excellent sales rep. And in order to get a good sales rep., you're going to have to look around. Visit showrooms, get referrals, etc...A sales rep. is so important because she/he is the one representing your brand and getting the sales, which is what you want. As for accounting, you do not need to hire them full time. You can just contract an accountant.
For production manager, we can be of assistance if you'd like. We also can refer you to pattern and sample makers. We are located in the United States (Los Angeles, CA) and are known for the quality of our work. We work a lot on referrals. For accounting, there are many good accountants out there. For a sales rep., as I mentioned earlier you will have to find them yourself since you are your brand. There's nobody more qualify than you to find the person that will represent your brand.

be very cautious with whomever you choose to handle the financial end of your company.
as displeasing as it might be..
i can understand from a creative viewpoint your position.
but you as the designer have to know what is being done.
step carefully..you are placing a tremendous amount of trust in someone else, who will be controlling your future.
you need someone who will be loyal.
and even then...keep a hand in, so you know how things are being handled.
look at it this way, your salary and survival will be dependant upon their choices.

I would love to know how you have faired at this crossroad as I find myself feeling the same way eventhough I also have department store corporate buying experience. I still feel that "I am a starter" and need to stay focused on the designing, marketing, etc I need a finisher with fashion knowledge. Someone to aid in decision on the business end and tie up the loose end and follow through on prospects but have enough of a fashion sense to give feedback when needed on a style cut or fabric, but not much. I am curious to know if you were able to find that partner/assistant and how because that is an obstacle for me at this time as well.
